Hi,

DD is being potty trained and were on day 5 with only 1 accident. The problem is she has always been funny about pooing and would only poo if no one was around etc. Now she wont poo on the toilet or potty and insists on a nappy. She suffers from constipation occasionally so I didnt want to make an issue out of it and been putting a nappy on but now shes getting crafty and saying she wants a poo so I put a nappy on and then shell wee in it.
Shes 2 and half

Do I tell her poos on the potty and risk her holdin it in or continue with nappies for poos for a while.

It is perfectly normal for a lot of toddlers to hate pooing on the potty, as they have a real fear of letting it go. I would put a nappy on if she wants to poo, and then try and use the potty for just wees. Do not worry if she wees in the nappy too, it is normal to do it together.

She will get the hang of it if you do not make a big deal of it, maybe use pull up pants so she have fun being grown up!

My ds was like this - he would only poo in a nappy for ages after he was peeing in a potty or in the loo no problem. He was was nearly 4 before he would poo in the loo. He used to come to me ans ask for a nappy, then go off into a corner and poo. I just let him get on with it - my feeling was that it wasn't causing any problems - it was only once or twice a dayY and I was worried that he would get constipated or develop a "complex" about it if I forced the issue. Let her have her nappy - she'll get there in the end! Well done for cracking the pee thing - you're nearly there!

When ds1 was being potty trained at the same age he was the same. My health visitor said to put an empty nappy in the potty, so they sit in the nappy, in the potty. I tried it and it worked. Only took a couple of goes, and then he was fine.

i got the same problem dd is just 3 has been out of nappies for wees for 6 months now but will not poo on potty! or the toilet! she did a couple at first but then went back to wanting a nappy on for them. she had stopped using the potty but we were at a friends house and she took herself to the toilet and fell down it! wont use a big toilet at home now but quite happy to when we are out or when she is in nursery!

I have decided to let her get on with it, i didn't really potty train her she just decided one day she was going to wear her big girl pants and she has never had an accident. am hoping the same will apply to the poo issue.

Hi

I can so understand what you're going through. My DS was dry in his pants almost immediately with no problems. However, would not even entertain the idea of a potty or toilet for having a poo though and was forever pooing his pants instead. I can remember being in tears of frustration over the whole situation as this went on for months.

However, I finally cracked it with him in the end by putting his potty in the lounge and let him watch his favourite programme on tv whilst sitting on it. He would quite happily sit on the potty for up to 30 mins whilst engrossed in a video or cbeebies and would almost always have a poo whilst doing this. Once he started this, I then started putting his favourite toy in front of him (his garage) instead and again left him sitting on the potty, and again this worked. After a while I managed to move the potty to the bathroom with a pile of books next to it, and then he eventually started pooing whilst sitting on the toilet reading his books. It took a while, but we got there in the end and although not the perfect method we were all happy and it worked!!

I also used to keep two clear plastic pots with lids. These were the reward pots - one had milky way stars in and this were for when he did a wee, and the other had chocolate coins or similar in (a bit more exciting) and this were for when he did a poo. I used to leave the pots sat on a shelf where he could easily see them.

Am just about to start potty training DD - just hoping it's all a bit easier with her!!!

Good luck.

Good point My2kids - reward charts! We used to have a reward chart int he bathroom, 1 star for a wee, 2 for a poo. When he had 10 stars he was bought a toy.

Ds has just turned 3, waiting in vain for him to become dry at night.......
