Cutting your own liners... why did it take me so long???

InvisibleFlamesparrow · 16/01/2007 16:20

I finally have liners that are wide enough and long enough to cover the entire nappy so you don't get the poo/liner/nappy edge merging!

DH wants to know why no-one can desgin a liner that doesn't twist round when the nappy is on... I have patiently explained that it is only when he puts them on that they do that

I would have thought 60 was only warm too... what does the label say?

v1 infor down the bottom

40 tends to get it out for me, I do do a rinse cycle, full length extra everything one and then a final rinse though!

SoupDragon · 17/01/2007 15:30

The lables are completely blank! The writing washed off months ago

SoupDragon · 17/01/2007 15:35

The other reason I don think it's the wash temperature that made them wear is that it's the velcro that's worn and I bet that's not changed between V1 and V2. It's a design fault because the velcro tabs are just velcro and this isn't strong enough IMO. I've mentally redesigned them so the stretchy sides go to the end of the velcro tabs and also replaced the poppers with a velcro strip plus fluffy panel...

That's a very good point about the velcro! I can't see your description the teeniest bit, but I'm sure it looks perfect in your mind

SoupDragon · 17/01/2007 20:06

Oh, it is perfect, believe me....

Instead of the velco being sticky out velcro tabs, it would be sewn on the underside of the stretchy sides (they'd need to be longer than they currently are).

Instead of poppers which dig into chubbly little legs, the adjustibility would be by velcro too - although I've not quite ironed out the details in my mind Where the 2 rows of poppery bits are would be the fluffy bit of velcro and where the top row of poppers is would be the bristly side. Then it would fold down just like the existing version....

SoupDragon · 17/01/2007 20:06

I need to get out more...

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 17/01/2007 20:42

Soupdragon, you seem to spend even more time on line than I do, and that's saying something!

Talking of making nappies, though, I'm thinking of giving it a go, too...

Flamesparrow1001010120120510 · 18/01/2007 08:26

Ooooh I can see it now too! I'm not sure about the popper bit working - one vigorous movement and it would come undone

I keep threatening to make a terry version in the shape of wbb - pretty much just a slightly different shaped tots. One day....

eidsvold · 18/01/2007 08:31

SD you can make them I can give you links.

They are expensive to buy here in Aus - $26.00!!

I made a whole swag for the new baby.... I have a couple of patterns if you want me to give them to you.

eidsvold · 18/01/2007 08:40

all you need to be able to do is straight stitching and zig zag - very easy. I made about 20 using old towels, some terry squares and old t-shirts..... even bought cheaper bath towels - had the bits and pieces for the soaker pad.

They look huge for a newborn but the first one goes up to 6 months and then the next pattern size goes up to 18 months or so.

I still have a tonne of my terry squares to use when babe gets bigger too.

here

more fiddly to sew

another more fiddly one

lots of links

I had an easier pattern that I used but can't seem to find it online.

eidsvold · 18/01/2007 08:45

\link{http://www.ottobredesign.com/en/print/pdf/vaippa_en.pdf\found it.

Instead of the two strips of velcro - I just got velcro that was the same width of the two thin ones iyswim. TOok not time to whip them up.

I had some prefolds that I cut into shape for the soaker pad iyswim.

You can do it!!!!

eidsvold · 18/01/2007 08:48

found it that's better.

SoupDragon · 18/01/2007 11:10

Flame, but the poppers are (a) ugly (b) dig into chubby thighs and (c) aren't as adjustable as my velcro system would be.... Of course there are problems to be ironed out. It would have to be strong velcro (as an aside, I'm sure my RAF mechanic brother once claimed the ejector seats in fighter jets were held in by heavy duty velcro!!)

Will look at thosepatterns, Eidsvold. Ta.

Soupy, weenotions sell pul I think in their whamall shop. They also sell fleece.

SoupDragon · 18/01/2007 11:21

Thanks

Now, where can I buy spare time from...?

Flamesparrow1001010120120510 · 18/01/2007 11:43

Not a clue but if you find it please can you send me the link

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 18/01/2007 12:09

Does anyone know where you can buy those really nice poppers? Snap fasteners just aren't the same.

eidsvold · 18/01/2007 12:14

i use pull up plastic pilchers - cheap at 3 for $2... so I have enough to go with every nappy as well as some kushies ones and some nature babies I had in the UK.

eidsvold · 18/01/2007 23:38

soupy what cut down my time was not having to make the soaker pads as I used old prefolds that I had and cut to shape..... I found taking a but of time to do it in stages. Cutting out one day, sewing soaker pads in another, then sewing the two sides together another, then elastic, then velcro.... so took a while iyswim.

SoupDragon · 19/01/2007 10:58

Obviousy I ordered the fabric anyway I don't have to make the soaker pads, Icould just use the BumGenius ones but I think that's part of their flaw - the pad doesn't fit properly as it's not shaped.

I could be launching the BabyDragon birth-to-potty pocket nappy before we know it! Snort!!

SoupDragon · 22/01/2007 09:08

The fabric arrived today and there's no way I can use it - it feels like balloons. I knew it wasn't a good idea to buy fabric without being able to feel it. Not sure wht I was expecting exactly - probably something more like the BumGenius feels like.

eidsvold · 29/01/2007 06:26

soupy - cheapish towels, old t-shirts.

I just cut the prefolds into the shape I needed.

I also used some flannelette I had here. You could buy cheapish single sheets and cut them up to make the nappies.

eidsvold · 29/01/2007 06:27

i used some muslin for the inside and old towels for outside panel iyswim.
