ds is almost 9 and ahs one. He likes games such as Narnia, Incredibles, Cars. tbh I think a 3 yr old would struggle with all but the most basic controls and certainly wouldn't be able to read all the script and instructions and understand the subtleties so don't worry too much on that score. Having said that 2 of ds' cousins -one 8 and one 7 - have had ds lites for Christmas but both console and software is more expensive.

My eldest two boys had one each for their 8th birthdays. They are now 10 and 9 and scarcely go a day without playing on them. In fact, when they get a new game, they can play it all day, every day which is a worry in itself. I wouldn't say there was much danger of them going off the things.

You can buy second hand games in GAMESTOP and GAME, usually about half the price of the new game and come completely gauranteed once you obviously keep receipt, some of the older games you could pick up for as little as 4-5 quid and then when hes bored with the game you can bring it back to shop and trade it in for store credit or cash (store credit is higher cos they obviously want you to spend it there) you wont get the same price that you bought it for but at least you get something!! and the more games you bring in, the more credit you get. at least its not such a waste.. when he gets bored with it. Hope this helps...

I know a 7yr old and a 12 yr old with a gameboy advance each (one of those flip top ones). My 8yr old nephew has a nintendo ds (newer style handheld with a pen). They would play with them ALL the time if the could get away with it! I bought my ds1 (5yrs) an older style gameboy advance from Ebay and he never plays it because it has no backlight and he can't see the screen - he likes our PS2 much more.

Nothing wrong with buying things from ebay - just make sure that they have a decent score after their username, and pay with paypal, then you've got backup to help complain if it does go wrong!

Kids go in phases, with the newest thing out being the most fashionable must have. Whatever you get, its going to be unfashionable and superseded sooner or later!

PS2's are pretty good due to the fact they'll play regular cd's and DVD's too, so its a three in one item! Very handy for space saving! HTH

Ours (SP) is backlit - ds plays in the car in the dark ! Perhaps that shade of pink is discontinued so they were clearing stock ?

play.com is cheap for games when you do get one!

lazyline · 13/01/2007 22:10

lisalisa, the 3+ recommendations are for content rather than difficulty. They let you know that there isn't any swearing or violence in the game.

BarbieLovesKen · 13/01/2007 22:35

lisalisa, no im in Ireland, but Gamestop have gone international - they've 30 something shops over here and I know they definately opened 3 shops in England a year ago with a view to keep going so id say theres loads more now.. sorry but not sure where abouts though..

OK I think I will be buying one of these for DD who is turning 6 in March. Someone suggested ebay, which looks promising (I fancy teh pink one, woops I mean she would quite like the pink one!!)

Now just to check am I right that Gamboy advance SP games play onthe Nintendo DS. but DS games don't play on the Gameboy?

I ask this as my older DD (coming up 8) may or may not like the DS (friends have one so we are keeping it in mind) and this means games could be sgared around

Blandmum · 27/01/2007 13:52

Yes you are right Crunchie, the newer game players still play the older games, but not the other way round. My two have had theirs now for about 2 years and still play them. They are a godsend on holidays/ long drives. They go in fits and starts of using them, but have proven very good value 'playwise'. Dd is thinking of upgrading to a DS. Some shops will let you 'trade in' your gameboy in part payment for a DS

MejustMe · 29/01/2007 13:00

Blockbuster video always have them reconditioned and cheap.....my son has a GBA and also a DS as well as an x-box, ps1 (giving it to his friend) and a Gamecube (selling with all games) The GBA, DS, and x-box are his favourite. Me well i am happy with my limited edition pink psp lmao x
