What do you feed yours?

First time posting in this area so apologies if I'm in the wrong place.

I was just wondering what everyone else feeds their kids after school ?

Days in the weeks are rushed and sometimes I feel guilty for feeding DS (age7) the obligatory fish fingers / beans. I try to plan where I can and we always have roast dinner / healthy home cooked food on the weekend.

Do you have any quick go to ideas ?

Jacket potato with tuna and sweetcorn/peas?

Home made wedges - Just cut the potato, spray with olive oil spray and bake for 25-30 min. In the same oven wrap some chicken breast or fish loosely in foiil with herbs/salt/pepper and bake for the recommended time.

Pre-make and freeze veg soup and have with floury baps with cold meat (could be from roast) and lots of salad.

Pasta - chop spring onions, tomato, cold cut meat and some mozzerella and stir through the still hot pasta.

...I never cook 'proper' meals in the week but strongly dislike ready meals. Mind you my DD already loves beans at just under 2! Grin So I'm not a food snob.

My DS has school dinners so is happy with nuggets, fish fingers etc on school days. He eats 'proper stuff' at the weekends. Personally I think a sandwich would do after a hot dinner at school but he says not!!!

Pasta is my go to meal for the kids if I'm in a rush. I'm a sahm so I have the time to make more 'proper' meals in the week but if we have been out and come in right before dinner time, I do something like pasta, passata, grated carrot in and cheese on top. Give them some berries and grapes afterwards and a yogurt and it feels like a balanced meal, haha

Lasagne, pasta bolognese, fajitas with side of rice, homemade burgers and wedges with bit of side salad :)

Today I started making tacos at 5.30 and it was on the table in 25 mins. Mince, onion, peppers, kidney beans from a can, sachet of sauce from the kit. Avocado, sour cream, salad, chopped cherry tomatoes, cheese. Kids love to build them themselves. I batch-cook bolognese and freeze it. Same with chilli. Plain cheese and tomato pizzas in the freezer, kids top with fresh veg, canned sweetcorn, scraps of ham or chicken. Veggie omelettes are a fave, and so quick.

Tuna and sweetcorn pasta, waffles nuggets and beans, spaghetti bol. They also have a cooked meal at school and so love it when I make a "picnic tea" as they call it - ham cheese grapes carrot sticks sausage rolls yogurts - basically any bits I've got in the fridge

There's nothing wrong with cheese or beans on toast either

winchester1 · 04/05/2016 21:20

You can stuff on a microwave jacket rather than bread of you feel better about that

Haudyerwheesht · 04/05/2016 21:25

Macaroni cheese
Tomato pasta
Chicken goujons with new potatoes and veg
Fish fingers / veg fingers with potato and veg
Sausages with potatoes and veg
Occasionally beans on toast / hoops on toast
Baked potato
Sometimes picky bits like nice bread / cheese / salad / dip / crisps / cold meat

Nothing very inspiring I'm afraid

Tillyscoutsmum · 04/05/2016 21:31

Mine both have cooked lunches so that takes away any guilt I might feel
for not having much time to cook "proper" dinners.

Things they may have include:-
Beans/cheese on toast
Sausage and (frozen) mash
Pizza (buy the bases and just get them to add passata and toppings)
Jacket potato with beans/tuna
Macaroni cheese
Chicken goujons and chips
'Picnic' tea (crackers, cheese, ham, salad sticks etc)
Soup (batch cooked or sometimes pre made) and bread/sandwich
Egg fried rice (with whatever bits of veg or meat I have lurking around)
Corned beef hash
Hot dogs
Fish cakes and salad

Egg and beans was a hit yesterday. Grin

Berries in yoghurt is a great quick dessert, can be jazzed up to look like a sundea.

Squaddielife · 05/05/2016 11:03

Wow Brilliant thanks everyone

Some lovely ideas there and It's nice to know i'm not the only one who falls back on frozen stuff sometimes.

Me & DH eat later on probably 3 nights out of 5 so I'm going to do a little meal planner for DS with your ideas. He does have school dinners but often chooses a 'sub' so basically a sandwich.
