Too ill for school/too well to be home?

Hi just after some advice really. DS is 5 but in year 1. He's had a cold and cough this weekend but basically OK. This morning he complained of being hot and found he had a slight temperature (38) he said he didn't feel well but isn't exactly ill (ate breakfast OK). Did I do this right thing by keeping him off? I have given him calpol and he is now just lying around watching TV and perfectly happy and temp 36.6. What would you do in this situation? I am wondering if I have been a bit PFB?!

If he needed calpol to help him feel well then he is ill enough to be off school IMO

Daisyandbabies · 03/05/2016 10:40

I would always keep off with a temp

I'd have given him the benefit of a doubt and kept him at home too. Make sure you enjoy a bit of a cuddle at some point today.

I'd have sent him in if he seemed fine like you say. 38 is not a temperature is it?

BathshebaDarkstone · 03/05/2016 11:06

I'd keep him off. You're controlling his temperature with Calpol. When it stays down by itself he can go back to school. Get some colouring books and pens in. When my DC are like that they're easily bored.

Moving yes it's only a slight temperature but part of my thinking was that I might be able to shift the cold if he was off today and resting. Anyway the school would have called me to collect him as soon as the calpol wore off! Bathsheba yes for both of us Grin

I wish my eyesight was good enough for those adult colouring books... Sad

I keep mine off. If they perk up you can get him to do some reading/ colouring/ writing stories etc so he's still learning

lavendersun · 03/05/2016 13:13

I always keep them off if in doubt. Who wants to be ill and not at home.

Temps increase naturally during the day anyway and if you gave calpol once that wears off the chances are he will feel poorly/it will get higher.

Better at home OP, you did the right thing.

Thank you MNetters. DS also suffers from myoclonic jerks and I am trying to see if there is a link between clusters of these (or big ones) and him feeling off; he had a big one at the weekend and bit his cheek and tongue. He's absolutely fine and enjoyed an afternoon of hunting for mini beasts in the garden Smile

38 is a temperature for most people: average body temperature in the morning I think is around 37 (by 40, many people are delirious). You can expect temperature to be a little higher by the end of the day, but 38 would still be a raised temperature. Some people have a really low natural body temperature: dd is more like 36: for her, 38 means she is quite ill.

I'd have kept at home.
