tantruming toddler and ikea highchair

Bit of a specific query here:
My tall 2 year old has started procrastinating at the ends of meals, especially lunch and dinner when he has nap and bedtime afterwards. Which I ignore and take him to bed anyway. But when I try to lift him out of the ikea highchair he goes rigid and somehow holds on with his legs and the highchair comes up with him so I can't lift him out. He's really heavy and I'm struggling to wrestle with him - any practical tips for detaching child from highchair in this situation?!

Try tickling him, he will go limp and you can quickly lift him out.

Maybe now is the time to consider using a booster seat on one of your dining chairs so he sits at the table for meals. It will make him easier to manage getting into/out of the seat and hopefully he will feel more grown up as he sits on chairs like you and other family members at meal times. My DS was tall and I started using a booster seat when he was about 18 mths old as he was too big to 'cram' into a high chair Smile.

Hmmm, two good suggestions there, thank you very much. I like the idea of not having to lift him into the highchair now that he's so heavy but on the other hand it's very useful to be able to confine him to the highchair when I need to get into the oven. The highchair is really spacious so he doesn't seem too big for it yet but he is heavy to lift in.
I will try the tickling in the short term while I look into booster seats!

Do you lift him from the front or from behind? It's usually easier from behind if they do that rigid thing. But if that doesn't work then I also rely on tickling

Can you combine a harness with a booster seat? Many years ago I used to tie the long handle of walking reins to the back of the chair, then clip the harness to that. Kept them in place, but easy to release. Also useful for visiting other people who don't have a highchair.

We have a munchkin booster that has a lap harness
