My DS will pooh stood up, how can I get him to use the loo?

My DS is 2 and 10 mths, and from being about a year old has always poohed whilst standing up. He has always been regular and to my knowledge has never been constipated or struggled with a pooh. We tried potty training at 2 and a half, and it was a disaster, so we left it a couple of months and he took to it straight away for wee's and was dry within one week and have had no problems in this area. But he just refuses to entertain the idea of poohing anywhere other than in his pants whilst standing up.

I am so frightened of getting it wrong as I don't know how to deal with it. I have tried sticker charts and bribery with sweets, to no avail, and we always remain calm and say "nevermind lets change your pants" - but add, "next time shall we try to go to the toilet or the potty when you feel the pooh in your bottom." He always agrees and says that he will tell us but then dissapears off behind the sofa or into the dining room and it all starts again.

I just can't think of a way to get him to sit down for a pooh. When we see him "Dancing" we incourage him to try and sit on the potty. He will sit there, but always under sufferance despite TV or stories or toys, and he will cry and shout to get off then will always get up and do his pooh five minutes later in another room.

Has anyone got any advice for a frustrated mummy!!??

Wish I knew the answer to this. Am embarrassed to say that my 3 1/2 year old who has been weeing in the toilet for over a year now is still asking for a nappy to do a poo. She stands up to do it and has never ever had an accident with a number 2 which shows that she has good bowel control. No amount of bribery has worked so far to get her to use the potty. Yesterday I could see that my 9 mth old son was trying for a poo, so I sat him on the potty and he did it there. We made a huge fuss and I bought him a new toy to congratulate him. My DD was very envious and I think disturbed as she had wet herself under the kitchen table. My Dad has offered to take her to toys r us to choose a toy when she does it and my Mum will make her her favourite cake so we can have a party. Don't think this will work either though. Am thinking of not buying any more nappies when this pack is finished to force the issue. Can anyone please help???

Hi everyone .. when I saw the title of this thread, I thought all my prayers had been answered .. but unfortunately not! My daughter who is 3 years 2 months was dry overnight almost as soon as we started potty training 10 months ago. However, she has identical issues as you guys in that she will only do a poo in a nappy and then only standing up. I have tried bribery, coaxing, gentle persuasion, offered to put a nappy in a potty, tried to get her to sit on the toilet in her nappy etc etc etc.. I have seen health visitors and doctors and still to no avail. I am getting so stressed and angry with her, and I know this really isn't helping, but she's so bright and articulate, I just can't understand what the problem is and why I can't help her. If anyone else has had this problem and has lived to tell the tale, please please let us know!

hi had this problem with ds up to age 3 years 9 months,we were worried and it was also embarrasing in the park! He would also sometimes have to push and strain a while to go (although was regular, not constipated)- I think that was part of the reason that he wouldn't use the toilet, although not sure. Anyway we kept trying with the toilet, one day while he was sitting he asked dh for a story, we told him half but said he could hear the rest when he had finished. This worked where sweets and stars etc never had! Although I do think he was more physiologically ready, poos coming more easily. My point is just that they will when they're ready, whenever that is, but keep suggesting the toilet patiently and asking them to at least sit on it as you never know.A seat with a step on it to rest their feet also helps (if they need to push). HTH X X
