does anyone still give their kids jam sandwiches?

I know it's not the best filling but just wondered what everyone's views were? I once made ds a jam sandwich when he was younger to take to school as we had run out of sandwich fillings for his packed lunches. It was a one off ! He went crazy with me saying it was peasant food and school would think I was mad. Obviously I wouldn't send him with them everyday I do know it's not a staple food and full of sugar but it just seemed odd to fly off the handle about it but yet we always have Nuttella in the pantry ? We got into a debate about it with my MIL too so it would be interesting what others think please ??

I always wanted Jam Sandwiches for school lunch but mum said it looked cheap ,lol. My nan still makes me jam sandwiches now and I'm 27 😊

I sometimes take chilli jam and cheese sandwiches for dinner at work. Not much difference between that and cheese and chutney or pickle really.

Chewbecca · 22/04/2016 09:46

The sandwich is fairly normal. Must be white sliced bread & generously buttered.

But did you mean to say your son flew off the handle and called it peasant food?? Or did I mis-read?

Chewbacca no I meant to say it was DH. Ds would be over the moon to have jam sandwiches every day.

Above poster is right though that peanut butter, chocolate spread, honey , marmalade etc etc are all surely of similar nutritional value.

I got to a point where I found packed lunches started driving me mad. Ds would only eat ham and mayo and if I tried him with anything else he wouldn't eat it. Plus it was costing up to and above £10 a week where as its £10.50 for school dinners where I know he's having a hot meal plus a variation of food everyday. Then I can just feed him crap for his tea

My mum used to make me buttered toast drenched in sugar - bloody lovely, it was! Grin

pottymummy · 22/04/2016 11:05

Generally no, but if I had nothing else then yes I'd give them jam sarnies. The only issue I have is that you do it once and they will ALWAYS want them. If we were allowed I'd choose peanut butter over jam, but for obvious reasons no peanuts at school.

musicinspring1 · 22/04/2016 11:13

They only come out at parties here but they're always a hit!

I can't bring myself to approve of plain jam sandwiches; adding butter is marginally better (this does belong on toast rather than soft bread), but I'd prefer peanut butter and jam. It's my American upbringing more than anything.

Beauty - at one point in my life I could have easily eaten 8 pieces of cheap, white toasted bread, dripping in butter and sprinkled with a cinnamon/sugar mixture. I couldn't eat for the rest of the day but it was worth it.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 22/04/2016 11:43

DH would be drooling if he was here to read that, reading - it sounds heavenly! Has to be cheap white bread, always!

Seeyounearertime · 22/04/2016 11:45

I Love Jam sarnies, I Love cheese sarnies.
My DD loves cheese sarnies and she loves Jam sarnies.

nowt wrong with a jam sandwhich

clarella · 22/04/2016 12:25

Jelly and peanut aka jam and peanut butter!

dementedpixie · 22/04/2016 12:32

Ds takes sandwiches made with 2 slices of bread. One half is jam and the other half is ham so he has a selection for lunch. Doesn't feel as bad as giving him all jam

ShelaghTurner · 22/04/2016 12:48

DD2's idea of heaven. DH would not approve but he horses down marmalade on his toast so it's merely a time and place thing with him.

bigkidsdidit · 22/04/2016 12:53

I have cheddar and strawberry jam sandwiches for my own lunch today Smile

SenecaFalls · 22/04/2016 13:13

I'm American so grew up with PB and J, and so did my children, but I have never liked peanut butter so it was always just jam (or jelly as we call it) for me.

Twitterqueen · 22/04/2016 13:28

Dare I also mention brown sugar sandwiches? (only when no-one is looking, obviously).

In my defence it was my father who introduced me to these. Born just before WW2, this was his idea of heaven.

clarella · 22/04/2016 13:46

I get cravings for lemon and sugar on toast (bit like pancakes) BlushGrin

uhoh2016 · 22/04/2016 20:18

Nothing at all wrong with Jam sandwiches. I often give my ds (14 month ) spread sandwiches cut into soldiers such as jam or dairylea. My eldest ds loves salmon paste sandwiches he'd have them every day if he could.

RabbitSaysWoof · 22/04/2016 20:25

I love cream cheese and raspberry jam.

My ds loves butter and jam cream crackers.

bastedyoungturkey · 22/04/2016 20:25

We went to London last year and had sandwiches in Harrods. DD (3) still remembers her jam sandwich! She loved it.

She has Lemon Curd at nursery!

She has whatever she asks for at home which is usually corned beef or tuna.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/04/2016 20:30

DH eats ketchup sandwiches. I hadn't come across that since primary school when.one weird boy would have them every single day...

edwardsmum11 · 23/04/2016 09:06

I would give it but my son won't have anything wet in his sandwiches as he has sensory issues. I eat it though and I'm 34
