Confused! Which nappies to choose?

Have been reading all your comments with great interest. Decided to try cloth nappies for new baby due in a few weeks. Had decided on Size 2 nippa fluffles and perhaps some prefolds to use until grows into adapted Size 2s. Like idea of fluffles not taking long to dry as don't have much space and don't want to use tumble drier but concerned about some people suggesting they smell horrid after a while. Have also seen some Wambamboos at good price but concerned about drying time and number I would need for newborn, hopefully breastfed baby. Was going to get multipack of 15 fluffles which come with 4 wraps and then buy 4 size 1 Motherease Rikki wraps. Sorry for long post, hope you can advise.

I'm a prefold freak - shaped nappies looked really huge and bulky on dd until she got to upwards of 12lb. Bamboo takes ages to dry - I use bamboo boosters at night, which are smallish and flat, and they basically need a night on the airer, a short blast through the tumble drier and then a night on the radiator to dry properly. A friend has some bamboo nappies, and happily admits that they take days to dry, but she likes them anyway. She also uses fluffles, and I've never heard her complain that they smell bad.

check out N.C.T sales in your area,I got 40 pre-folds,and 10 outerwraps for £40.total bargain.I couldnt afford to buy new.Really worth checkin out if you can get to one.

Remember that what-ever you buy will probably be too big in the first days / weeks. We used Muslins and size0 prowraps, folded in the 'jo fold' (as found on Nappylady.co.uk) and that worked really well until she grew into her bamboozles.

How about getting some Fluffles and some other cotton nappies to use, so you aren't using the Fluffles all the time, give them a chance to de-pong.

preggerspoppet · 01/02/2007 20:56

agree jillybeans, muslins are so great for the first few weeks as the baby is so small. You have to get the hang of the folding (nappylady website has some really good ones) but the baby stays nice and still so it's a doddle after a bit of practice.

a size two fluffle will look HUGE on a neworn but not only that, because you are changing so often in the early days it might feel like you are doing huge amounts of washing ( a whole bucket+ of bigger fluffles compared with a half bucket of muslins.)

Have you considered buying small fluffles then flogging them on e-bay for when you need the size two? this is what we did and I was amased at how much we got for our used ones.

The nice thing about fluffles is that they stay in such lovely condition, I think they absolutely don't smell, especially when compared with other nappies and the quick drying bit is a godsend come your 467th load!

good luck with them x

preggerspoppet · 01/02/2007 21:00

sorry, not very clear about the big fluffles, I meant to say that it's because the very small baby only does a tiny bit of wee or poo really but you still have to change probably at each feed.

(unlike my ds who wears a size 2 now aged 15 months (a big boy) and absolutley drenches it overnight, without any leaks leaving it weighing half a ton!)

lunavix · 01/02/2007 21:05

I've got a size one fluffle for sale if you are interested, and also some size 1 normal totsbots and kissaluvs. All new, plus some new motherease wraps.

I used them all on ds happily. This baby has turned out a different shape!

PinkTulips · 01/02/2007 21:18

My bamboo nappies all dry withing 12 hours draped over the radiator (which is only on for a few hours in the morning and evening) so don't really get that 'they take ages to dry' stuff. They dry as quick as bumbles do!

not tried fluffles but have you considered getting a few different nappies of different shapes to try on baby when it's born... all babies are different and both lunavix and i are learning the hard way that nappies that suited our first simply don't work on our new babies.

use muslins for the first few weeks and try a few different nappies and buy a full set of whatever you decide on after baby is born. You'll appreciate the chance to do some post birth shopping anyway!

lunavix · 01/02/2007 21:24

lol I think we're suffering the other way round aren't we PT?

ds was such a chunky baby and his tots and kissies and bumbles just don't fit dd, with her no waist, no bum and tiny thighs!

Having said that, the thing they do have in common is a minimum of 5 poos a day...each... still.

preggerspoppet · 01/02/2007 22:18

true true, my ds2 was out of tots aplix size 1 by 5 months and was average size baby then so should have lasted longer, guess it was is delicious thunder thighs that did it!

a nipper fluffle should be less of a risk if you just had to have them before birth, but much better idea to use muslins and try a few.

(there should be a warning message with this advice though; trying a few will lead to strange obsessive addiction!)

maisiemog · 02/02/2007 00:31

I have a new birth to potty nappy that my friend made if you want to trial one for nothing? It's hemp, but a fast drying design.
You can email me maisiemog at gmail dot com.
Sorry, I don't think you the system lets you post email addresses so I have to write it in a peculiar way.

PinkTulips · 02/02/2007 13:15

lol preggers... can relate to thunder thighs!

with dd i avoided the obsession as she only ever had bambino mio.... coulc never understand why people had 20 differant brands... then i had to shop around for ds and i'm addicted!

luna... yep, we're the opposit way round, dd is a skinny mite that is in smaller size nappies at 2 than ds is at 6 months with his big bum!
