Working and children starting school

At the moment I am trying to decide whether to stop work next year when ds starts school so that I can pick him up and be with him when he comes home. Just wondering what others think - how important is it to be there when your child gets home from school? Will he need it to be me? I'm prepared to do it but worried about how much I will miss work. At the moment both ds and dd go to nursery 3x a week on the days I work and I need work to restore my sanity. But.... just before ds starts school we will be moving to a new area so I will have no choice but to leave my current job. If I stayed at home I could retrain in something else if I don't have child no3. But, I also need to decide whether to have child no3 or not which is totally dominating my thoughts all the time at the moment (I'm 35 this year and ds and dd are almost 3 and 16 months atm). I'm a bit overwhelmed about all these decisions and don't seem to be able to make any. Just wish I could at least sort out ONE of them.... All advice gratefully received and sorry for rambling post.

Give it a try. I gave up work when DS1 started school and i'd just had no3, thought I would miss work but I don't really. for me the fact that the 1st term DS1 only had school in the mornings was a deciding factor, I couldn't cover that and looking after DS2 (2) getting DD(3) to and from preschool and DS1 too and from school fills my time. I'll get a job sometime but at the moment the logistics of working childcare round the three of them is not worth the hassle.

Well I wouldn't give up work just so you can pick your son up from school. If he hasn't needed you all day at nursery, why would he need it to be you at the school gates?

I'm guessing you sort of want to give up work anyway. Would seem to make more sense if you decided whether to have another baby or to retrain - that makes it easier to decide whether to give up work.
