OK - I've been potty training dd (2.9) for a few days with mixed success (more success now I've introduced smarties everytime she wees in the potty), and I keep chickening out of going outside with her in proper pants rather than nappies/pull ups... I know the answer is probably yes, but tomorrow I am going shopping with m-i-l (who thinks I should have potty trained dd months ago) so should I brave it with dd in pants or take the safe option of pull ups? And, would it be right to think that pull ups are pointless in the whole potty training fun, and I just have to grin and bear lots of little puddles everywhere?....

i would use the pull -ups.

then grob in your MILs brew next time she come round

hotandbothered · 08/01/2007 15:40

I'd do the pants. MIL might be more supportive if she sees what it is really like. Also dd might surprise you... Can you plan lots of visits to ELC, Debenhams etc where you know there'll be a loo?

We gave up on pull-ups because dd didn't see the point of weeing on the potty if the pull-ups would catch it all anyway.

Good luck and HTH

go with the pants she'll ask for the toilet out shopping, they think public toilets are fun! pull ups waste of time and money!

Thanks - I think I will brave it, and not stray from John Lewis. Trouble is that dd will only wee in the potty when there's no-one else in the loo, so I think she's going to hate the idea of weeing in the travel potty in John Lewis' baby room .

think I will also give up on the pull ups and see if the lure of smarties do the trick (so she'll end up fat as well as potty trained...) Why does no-one warn you how little fun potty training is?

would love to have this dilemma!
dont like pants, dont like pants...

good luck, think i would go with pants; pull ups are confusing i think.
happy shopping!

I had the same "i don't like pants" but now she's fine as long as the pants have penguins on them...

YOu have to brave with pants at some time or another, but I imagine she will need to be happy with going on the toilet rather than potty first, otherwise she will have one accident when youre out and youll end up sticking a nappy straight back on because you cant be doing with the hassle.

suzycreamcheese · 08/01/2007 17:26

beccadillo..have got combat pants, pirate pants (really fab w/ maps, skulls etc).. after chat w/ nurse lately have decided ds can tell me when ready he knows whats going on.. (just cant stress any longer..) strangely enough he is 2.9 too!
good luck with it all

making mental note to source some penguin pants, that could be the answer..

ProfYaffle · 08/01/2007 17:46

When I was at this stage with dd I put pants on her with a pull up over the top. She only had one accident iirc but she could feel it without a big mess on the floor.

Beccadillo · 10/01/2007 19:58

Hooray - amazingly, it worked... How strange is that? She was completely dry all day, completely cool with going to the loo even in a messy laura ashley staff loo - amazing. She then made up for it by getting so involved in Pingu she weeed all over the sofa - but who cares?!

Now all I need is a poo in the potty (not, me obviously..........) and then I will be very happy.

Is it sad that my life has come to that? Thanks for advice everyone!
