Baby slumping in car seat when asleep

Ds is almost 9 months, quite long and in a fixed seat rather than infant carrier. It's a maxi cosi opal, rear facing seatbelt fixed. When he falls asleep he often slumps forward, really badly. I have to keep stopping to put him upright. What cam I do about this? It looks uncomfortable and dangerous - surely it hinders breathing?

Do I need to get a different seat?

Is it reclined as far as possible? Also is there a hugger type insert?

It only has one recline rear facing so yes. It doesn't have a newborn insert. There was a cushion under the bum.but he's too big for that.

How flat are your car seats? We had a car with sports type seats that sloped quite a lot towards the back. The slope meant that even when reclined the car seat was quite upright. Britax produce a wedge to flatten their car seats, but I believe you can use a rolled up Towel too

Dd is 18 months and we still use the under bum cushion which helps. She's a bigger child too

I might add the cushion and see if that helps but I think it must be the angle of the car seat. I will look into a wedge thanks

We had that problem with DD, got her position checked over in mamas & papas and they said she was fine and not to worry too much. She did it constantly when we borrowed a car where the seats sloped more. We've moved her into a cybex sirona now, which reclines more, and so long as we recline it when she sleeps, she doesn't do it any more. It might be worth thinking about the next stage car seat if you're worried about it.

My baby does it sometimes as she wants to sit up but then she's fine when asleep, maybe try a d fasten the belts tighter

Yes he does,strain to sit up sometimes, I do the harness as tight as I can.

I had the same issue - even with the infant carrier I got upset with head flopping on occasion. Maxi-Cosi actually have a statement somewhere saying that while it looks dangerous, your child is still actually safe...and another of the big carseat makers have issued a similar public statement. Didn't make me feel any better though!

I have sloped seats and with the second stage seats which are more upright, the problem seems very common with extended rear facing. After loads of research I bought the BeSafe IZI modular - which has a great recline and fits my compact car. We've only had one floppy head incident so far but it didn't look too uncomfortable. I know it is as safe as I can get and I'm really pleased with it but whoooahh....you certainly pay for that comfort!

My DD does this in her Britax dualfix. she lifts her head up after a while.

We had this, since moving to 2nd stage rear facing seat (BeSafe X1 Kid iSisze) and now use a trunki yondi neck pillow to support dd's head - works a treat. Pillow says for 2yrs+ but our girl is big (90th centile) and it fitted her fine from 12 months.

My dd did this in her maxi cosi cabriofix as well as the second seats we have used. I have a britax duo fix now and she still does it, she is 2.7. I have been assured by everyone that she is safe and she does move to a more straightened position after a while

We have a newborn insert and wedge with ours, I took out the newborn insert but kept the wedge in and it stops her head lolling forward when she sleeps.

Meant to add my DD is ten months, ours is a Nuna rebl and they said to keep as many inserts in as poss until baby is one, dependent on size of baby.
