My dd (2.3) tells me mostly when she is weeing/pooing. shall i just put really big girls pants on and see how it goes?? she hates being wet so think it will kickstart the process? Any thoughts please !

You can if you like. I'd say if you're old enough to be posting on an internet forum, you're probably old enough for big girls pants.

Oh!

You mean your DD!

No idea.

Yes go for it - I think it's very difficult to try and train in pull-ups or the like and you can always use nappies for when you're out and about (although this was when dd was the best!) I certainly have several friends who had potty trained kids at 18months and I just think it depends on the kid.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought Shiningstar was the one who would be wearing the pants. Sorry, Shiningstar.

I think you should go for it but I have one minor concern ...

When I did this with ds3 he was so proud to be in pants, then devastated at having 'blown it' when he had an accident. He seemed to think he was a failure.

I didn't tell him off for it or anything so I don't know where he got the idea. But it certainly shook his confidence. I don't quite know how I could have avoided it.

Yes this is what I did with my DD 2.6 yrs. She definately hates being wet and even from the beginging of training she really hasn't had too many accidents.

I still put a nappy on her when she sleeps and take it off as soon as she wakes up. For her car seat I found an absorbent mat thingy called a piddle pad (I think??) which is plastic backed to contain accidents.

We always have a potty around and she has a seat on the toilet with a step to help her get on it.

Just keep being positive and encourage her when she uses the potty and be sympathetic and don't make a big deal out of accidents. I find a simple "Oh dear let's get changed blah blah blah..." is enough.

I must admit that we got through many packets of smarties in the begining but have eased her off of them now.

Good luck and stay positive. Don't worry if it doesn't work straight away or if you need to go back to nappies for a bit longer. She will do it when she is ready.

I porbably should add that when we are at home it is rare that she wears anything on her lower half which could get wet!!
She has great undressing skills!!

Sounds like she's ready.
My DD wasn't much older when she let us know she was ready (we weren't!!). Bit the bullet, took potty everywhere and had very few accidents. Poos took a LOT longer though - 3 months of pooey pants - yuck!

shiningstar · 09/01/2007 19:08

tried to venture to toddlers today! oops 2 wees on my lap!! apart from that everything in potty or big toilet! fingers crossed!
