Are these signs she is ready? (never done this potty traning malarky before!)

HI everyone

Looking for some words of wisdom.

DD (nearly 21 months), for the last week or so, has been telling me before she wants to wee or poo, but when I ask her if she wants to sit on the potty she says no and runs off!

She wants to take her nappy off as soon as she has pooed (and sometimes manages to ) and also last week I went into her room in the morning and she had taken her nappy off during the night and thrown it on the floor!

Is she ready or should I leave her a bit longer?

I am inclined to leave her til after we some back from our holiday (August) but only because of convenience!

At the same time I don't want to miss this 'window of opportunity' IYSWIM.

Help!

x

essbee am really scared! How stupid does that sound?!

If I try and I ask her to sit on the potty and she says no and runs off, like she does now, what do I do?!

AAAAAHHHHHH!

If you have time try it now as you don't really have much to lose and i think they are easier to motivate younger. Don't worry about the holiday though. dd (32 months) is still not reliable at home but we spent last weekend at Disneyland Paris and she was great asking for the toilet and holding on, even on the 7 hour drive back. Being that bit older it has been more of a power struggle and she is reluctant to interrupt her activity.

Well done to your dd, essbee - can she have a word with mine please .

marialuisa · 26/05/2004 14:01

Try her! As i've posted numerous times before DD was successfully trained at 18m, so it's entirely ossible.

Will she sit on the potty with her nappy on or does she seem reluctant? I found the DK Potty Book for Girls great as it had pics of "real" girls using the potty. If you do go ahead make sure you take her to the loo regularly rather than relying on her to tell you straightaway IYSWIM. August is a long way off and she could be reliably trained by then! On the other hand if she isn't, she's still young so no harm done!

Thanks for your words of support!

marialuisa, she will sit on her potty, with her nappy on and off. Its just keepng her there. But perhaps she hasn't wanted to go badly when she has sat on there.

She will go and sit on it herself whilst I am busy too, sit in front of the tv on it!

A book might be a good idea - will pop into Mothercare on the way home. And perhaps take her shopping for knickers!

I think she sounds ready. You just have to take the nappies off and wait for the accidents - then she will realise that she needs to go to the potty. Our first day with ds1 was all accidents but the second day was perfect. Before we took nappies off we used to read stories to ds1 on the potty - it kept him there for ages!

Also, I would get the knickers and talk to her about them. Ask if she'd like to try. I think she'll say yes!
