My baby fell off my bed!!

My nearly 8 month old fell off our bed onto the carpet. I left her on there in the middle of it and she must have learnt how to sit up from lying down. I was running a bath and heard a Big Bang and she was on her back crying. I feel such a shit, shit mum right now, I hate myself.

She stopped crying after 2 minutes and I managed to get a few smiles out of her about 10 mins after. She had a full 8 oz bottle and went to sleep. Do you think I should be worried? I am worried and have checked on her 3 times already, she has no lumps or swelling.

DD1 bounced all the way down the stairs when she was about 8 months old (stairgate not shut properly). She landed on a pile of towels I'd put at the bottom to bring upstairs. I was in an awful state about it, but she was fine. I think I cried more than she did!

Thanks so much everyone. I laid in bed last night until late worrying, but each and every one of your posts reassured me. A little bit of what Mumsnet is about!

She is fine this morning and has hopefully forgotten all about it!

These things are a little warning - they just keep you on your toes, and make you realise that your tiny baby is more capable than you realised. Like the time DS opened a drawer in the kitchen by himself, and came in brandishing (thank goodness) a wooden spoon. I moved the sharp knives elsewhere that very afternoon!

Anyway, good to hear she's fine.

My DD (11mo) has done it a few times. Most recently a few weeks ago, when DH was meant to be watching her. I left the room to get some nappies from her room, heard a huge thud and DD crying. Went back to my room, and she had fell off of the bed because DH was busy watching a video on his fucking phone Angry
She's fine. No bumps and stopped crying within a few minutes. It happens to almost every baby sooner or later! My DD is walking now and is like a bull in a china shop Blush always walking into things, dropping things on her feet - babies are just clumsy little creatures!

This is definitely a rite of passage. I posted on mumsnet in the same horrified panic when DD1 did this and got the same responses you have.

I have 3 children now and DD2 and DS have both done this. They were both fine so now I post on these threads so worried new mothers know that it is ok.

Welcome to the secret club! DS dos this when he was 8 months too. These days he gets so many self inflicted bruises from launching himself headfirst at things that I have lost count.

TheWeeBabySeamus1 · 01/04/2016 13:51

We've all done it Grin, and we've all beat ourselves up for it long after the DCs have forgotten. If it makes you feel better my DS fell off the bed twice (you think I'd have learned after the first time!).

First time he fell was the first time he'd ever rolled over and he went with a right bang, scared me shitless. Ran down to the GP surgery in tears (DS was fine, happily gurgling away while I sprinted the mile to the surgery) convinced that I was the worst mum ever... the doctor just laughed, said DS was fine and sent us on our way.

Second time, I have no idea what happened. Left him on my bed while I went to the loo, came back and he was gone! Panic took over ( I thought he might have gotten stuck under a pillow and suffocated Blush ) and I started frantically tearing the sheets off the bed, heard a giggle and looked under the bed... and there was 6 month old DS happy as Larry playing with my slipper Shock no clue how he got down there without hurting himself.

I was doing my hair for my passport photo when that happened to me. Every time I look at my passport I think of 8 month old DD1 crashing onto the thick squidgy carpet. At the time it felt as though I'd dropped her from the second floor onto concrete.

Welcome to the club. I'm glad she's fine today.

My four week old fell out of the moses basket onto the floor - not even old enough to roll, it was totally my fault. Thought I'd be clever and move the whole basket rather than pick her up but a handle slipped out my hand and out she rolled. Landed tummy down on the floor. I was terrified, took her to the doctors, all fine. They are surprisingly robust! I felt so awful though, I was upset for days!

Yesterday my 19 month old fell off the changing table, head first.
He just sat up, rubbed his head and said uh oh.

Kids are bouncy. And they fall off things. Don't beat yourself up about it Smile

SoupDragon · 01/04/2016 14:03

DD rolled off my bed, under it and repeatedly smacked her head on the wooden slats. Quality parenting moment.

badg3r · 01/04/2016 16:05

Anyone had a baby who's NOT done this?!

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 01/04/2016 16:10

My dd went over the arm bit of the sofa onto floor boards the day before her 1st birthday, she had a huge bump on her forehead in all the birthday photos Blush Grin they are tougher than you think.

BlueThursday · 01/04/2016 22:48

DH once went to turn DD to world facing in her pushchair but randomly decided to pick the pushchair up by her toy bar rather than the whole thing.

Of course the bar gave way and DD ended up upside down on the ground. She wasn't fussed though she was trying to look at otters Grin
