Odd noises in the night from a 6 week old: are they normal?

My ds makes very odd noises periodically through the night in his sleep. I can only describe them as the noises baby woodland/jungle creatures might make!... snuffling, snorting, creaking and trumpeting. These are combined with what sounds like congestion on his chest and sometime he writhes around in his basket (tho he shows no signs of conventional "distress").

During the day he is a very peaceful sleeper (when he does sleep).

I have suddenly thought that maybe I should worry that these noises are not normal (it has been going on since birth...tho we had his breathing checked out in week 1), and will book a doctors appt to get him checked out next week, but wondered if anyone elses babies have similar sleeping activities and can put my mind at rest for the weekend. I'm dreading that it could be something awful and I should have had him checked out sooner.

so normal Jaz - DD is now 4 months but for a good few weeks she sounded as If she was being strangled in the night, she also had the congestion bad...I even mentioned it to HV, so rest assured they ke many odd noises (and usually very loudly )
Hope this helps

My DS was such a grunter at this age, even when he was asleep I wasn't, because he was so noisy! Always good to get things checked out, but sounds pretty normal to me

Perfectly normal - my DD is 7 weeks and we had a long discussion last week with the HV at my ante-natal reunion about the noises babies make at night; the snotty/muscous-y noises at night are apparently pretty standard, raising the head end of the crib/cot slightly helps.

My DS made some really strange grunting/straining noises in his sleep too - worrying at the time but apparently perfectly normal! If he's ok otherwise there shouldn't be anything to worry about, but doctor can give you peace of mind.

hi jaz,
I have 12 week old DS. He also makes lots of odd noises in the night, mainly pig/snorty/choking noise, or a high quick whooping one. I've come to the conclusion it must be normal as he's done it since birth, noises just getting more varied and louder now! so think it's normal.. however, the snorty pig ones sometimes mean not enough burping, so that could be a cause..

Thanks everyone for your comments, which have put my mind somewhat at rest - suggest a couple of things to check (no-one ever warns you that from the moment you are pregnant the worries you used to have pale into insignificance to the ones you will have in the future!). I spoke to my HV today, but she was pretty unhelpful and seemed mystified by what I was talking about. Hopefully the doc will be a little more helpful tomorrow.

DS never stirred once asleep but DD (now 13 weeks) makes such strange noises at night that I made it all the way downstairs cursing DH for having left the cat in (our cat makes strange noises too - she can quack!) - only to find very confused cat shut out in utility room as normal - it was DD! She seems to have stopped now, except just before she wakes in the morning - which I have come to the conclusion is a cunning baby tactic to make sure that Mummy is good and awake by the time you need her

Thanks for all the advice. Having completely embarrassed myself by having to impersonate for the doctors benefit the noises my son makes (the doctor didn't seem to understand what I meant by "woodland animals!), he now seems to have stopped making them. In a way I now quite miss them, and wish I had recorded them to embarrass him in later life!

My 8-week-old daughter is making the exact same noises. It's nearly like she talks to herself in her own way in her sleep.
