Clothing Advice - How thick is thick enough?

Hi all you mums out there.

I really need to know if there is some sort of rule when clothing your childern for the day.

I'm a 1st time mum and I have a 9month old son, and was told to dress him in 1 layer thinker than what i was wearing myself.
However my partners parents keep telling me im not dressing him warm enough and i need a hat on him whenever we go out.

Generally if i go anywhere i use my car and my daily routine is from the house to the car and then from the car into the childminders house so i dont see a need for his clothes to be overly thick or for him to wear a hat. That and he normally falls asleep on his journey, so i'm then worried that he'll get too hot with us being in the car.

Please please help ...any advice would be greatful

Thank you in advance

Follow your own instincts here.

I think the 'one layer more than you' rule is a good one. Why not take a hat and then if your ds feels cold put it on, if not don't.

Did you think your ds was fine before the gps comments? If so ignore them.

People are always giving out advice to parents and mostly it just makes us worry more when we were doing fine beforehand

Thank you so much.

I never though he was cold, and we we're just fine before the comment. I use his hood to keep any wind off him when getting in and out of the car, but after their comments i was unsure if i was doing the right thing.

Your reassurance is just what i needed.

Thank you again

sounds fine. i put dd in basically the same as i'm wearing but she always has a vest on as well, so one extra layer. if we go for a pram walk she has her hat and coat, if we go in car just coat, with hood also.

I always did the one more layer thing too. But mainly because I don't drive so both of mine are/were out and about and exposed more to the elements.

If you are out with a baby or toddler in a pram/buggy, don't forget they won't necessarily be as warm as you as they aren't moving!

One thing, all babies and children feel the wind far more than adults ime, so if you are using the pram then use the rain shield too.

Thank you Mercy, I do tend to protect him more when were out and about in the pram. Your advice is much appretiated

People are always telling me DS isn't dressed warmly enough too! But each child is different - I don't even put a coat on DS when we go in the car, he gets really hot in his car seat (he's quite a warm baby, think he takes after me as I'm always too hot!). I do wrap him up warmly with hood on when we're walking with pram as obviously he's out in the wind, etc. Like to others have said if his neck is warm he's fine - he'll let you know if he's too cold!
