What do you do about a boy who is sometimes wet, sometimes dry but is such a heavy sleeper that you can change him and his bed and he doesn't wake up?

Anyone?

Nothing you can do about it until he's ready to be fully dry, really. There's a hormone that kicks in to suppress urination overnight, and until that happens there's nothing you or he can do to make him dry.

My dd will be 6 in May and is still in nappies overnight - I don't think it's worth stressing about too much at the moment.

Thank you.

was just going to start a thread myself

DD is also 5 and we just persuaded her to give up her night nappy. First night she was dry, following 2 nights she was 'too tired to get up' which was around 0600.

First 2 nights we sort of wake her up at midnight and make her go to the toilet. Last night I asked her whether she had to go and she said no... ah well now I also have to wash the duvet.

Agree with WigWamBam. Not much you can do until he is ready.

We once had 11 nights of dry bed and then 11 wet ones. He can do it, there is just no rhyme or reason about how or when. Lifting doesn't work. He doesn't wake up properly, doesn't do anything and it just upsets him. Plus it gives him a broken night.

My 3 year old daughter was only damp this morning. Wondering whether to bite the bullet with her.

All those whose children were dry at night by 3, did they just do it themselves or were you more proactive? I know about the hormone level, etc but I have 2 more children and don't want to get it wrong again.

children are dry at night when they are ready. I had one dd dry at just under 3 at night and the other has only just done it at 7!

juuule · 04/01/2007 11:32

I had one dry at night at 2y and another dry at night at 2.5y. They just started to wake in the morning with dry nappies.
The 2 who took the longest were about 5.5y and 8/9y old. Nothing we tried made them dry any quicker.

agree it can vary with siblings. DS was 3 1/2 and DD was 2.2.

Hold on in there NAB3 - I used to feel there was something wrong with my DS - he was 5 and 1/2 before he was dry at night - my younger daughter age 2 was dry before him!

But it is normal - boys brain's develop different and they need to mature more before the wake up signals get there. Just keep going with 'bedtime pants' (pull ups etc) and relax about it all - we found any sort of pressure to push him before he was ready worked the wrong way.
We also tried no pants and he would sleep in his on wee without waking and get very sore. So we just had bed time pants and made no fuss. I thought sleep overs would be embarressing - but soon found 3 out of 5 other boys were also still wearing bed time pants at the age of 5 too!

NotQuiteCockney · 06/01/2007 08:59

My DS1 was dry at night at 3. We didn't do anything to make that happen - it's all down to hormones, also how big their bladder is, and how heavily they sleep.

juuule · 06/01/2007 09:00

Not just boys, though. My dd was 5.5y before she was dry at night.

juuule · 06/01/2007 09:02

And 2 of my boys were out a night by around age 3.
