If your child is frightened of falling in the toilet...

Avoid "The Baby's Catalogue", Janet and Allen Ahlberg, the page entitled 'accidents'. Very charming, funny picture of a baby falling into a toilet in the bottom right hand corner. Hadn't looked at this book for ages - when DS produced it. "Oh no DS, thats a silly picture, ofcourse that baby isn't falling down the toilet". Looking back, maybe I subliminally planted the idea of falling into the toilet in DS's mind by reading this book when he was about 18 months old...?

Its a common fear. In many ways it is understandable and rational. Just think how big the hole is and how small the child's bum is.

All you need is a loo seat. My son at almost the age of five years old still like to use a loo seat. He will give up the loo seat when he is ready. I let him use the potty as long as he wanted to and now he uses the toilet by choice. I am sure that he will give up the loo seat when ready. At school they have tiny loos and it isnt a problem. When we are out and about he stands up to wee and I hold him when he sits on a big loo seat. Even so there have been times that he has sat on a big loo seat all on his own.

All these things come with time.

Which loo seat do you have? DS can stand and wee on his own, but he needs somebody to hold the loo seat in place to stop it from sliding around.

We have this toilet seat

My son can fold the toilet seat down when he needs it. It is attached to the toilet so it doesnt move too much. We got ours from john Lewis.

A plastic step to help your son on the toilet will make him more confident
