The "no question too stupid" reusable nappy thread

I thought it might be nice to have one thread where anyone planning to use reusable nappies can post questions about them. I think most people agree that the amount of information and options out there can be a bit bewildering when you're researching.
I know the whole nappies topic is a bit like this but at least if it's just one thread then the people who love talking about nappies (me Blush) can keep it 'watched' and always reply!

The bamboo ones are certainly more absorbent - maybe try them.

Nan0second · 22/09/2016 19:45

You may need to change to something where the whole nappy is fleece lined if she's sensitive to any wet.
I recommend a nappy library to try some different sorts. Maybe a gnappy or similar?

Nan0second · 22/09/2016 19:46

Gnappy aren't fleece lined though but you can get boosters
That are fleece topped!
Bumbles are 2 parters which are fleece lined. Alternatively a pocket or an all in one might work... Miosolo with your little lambbooster for decent wetters or real easy or wonderoos?

I thought it might be useful to put this link here. It's a map of all the cloth nappy libraries in the UK. As a nappy librarian I'm obviously biased but I do think that anyone considering using cloth nappies should get in touch with their local library as they are a brilliant resource. AlfieTheRailwayCat · 22/09/2016 21:28

I'll have a look st those options but I bought a kit from little lamb based on nappy last recommendations so I'm not sure if I want to spend more money if she's going to dislike them. Do you get bamboo boosters? And would I put that between her and the nappy or between her and the fleece layer?

Hufflepuffin · 23/09/2016 11:46

Are the fleece liners big enough? I cut enormous ones out of a fleece blanket. You could also try putting a layer of microfibre under the fleece to suck the wee up quicker. I've been back to both little lamb and the nappy lady asking for trouble shooting help with nappies I've bought and they've been great both times.

Anyone using pop-ins? We're getting leaks with them, both day and night, up the back. Not every time, but today was the first time she leaked during the day.

Nan0second · 24/09/2016 10:44

Alfie: layer should be fleece next to skin then booster then nappy then wrap. Agree a much bigger fleece would keep her skin dry.

Nan0second · 24/09/2016 10:56

Carrot: is the inner of the close pop in right into the knicker line?
When it leaked, was the booster saturated? Most likely it needs an extra booster in, probably bamboo or hemp.
They don't normally last most babies at night. You would be better with a two parter such as bamboozle (maybe with an extra booster) plus a motherease or blueberry wrap. Hope that helps

CarrotPuff · 25/09/2016 12:07

Thanks. I think I've left it too long during the day. I've also increased the rise of the nappy.

I am just in the process of building my stash. I am using bamboozles at night, I just didn't have enough till now.

Do you use an extra booster with bamboozles, I mean in addition to the snap in that it comes with?

cudbywestrangers · 25/09/2016 19:45

Hi carrot !
Think my ds2 is the same age as your little one (have you been on the feb 16 convo as your username is familiar?) and we use the snap in booster plus an extra on the bamboozle here. Still pretty sodden in the mornings!!! And we're not using the poppers to reduce the rise anymore!

Nan0second · 25/09/2016 20:45

Yes I use a trifold hemp as well as the snap in booster. That combo holds up to 800ml apparently(!)
Heavy wetter here...

drspouse · 25/09/2016 21:32

Where do you get trifold hemp? We probably need more boosting in our night time nappies too - DD is mainly potty trained in the day but seems to hold it in for night time now!

Nan0second · 26/09/2016 14:19

We have Little weeds but they also do bigger weeds
Or from tj's

CarrotPuff · 26/09/2016 19:37

Yeah I was. I keep falling off the thread though...

I guess we need some extra boosting during night here too. This morning there was a bit of dampness around legs, you know the kind when you're not sure if you're just imagining it? The nappy was sopping wet. Going to get some bamboo boosters, for now just used the night booster from the pop ins. She's got mega bum tonight!

What wraps is everyone using for night? I've got one peanut wrap, which was good but tonight I struggled to get a good fit with extra booster in.

Nan0second · 27/09/2016 08:39

Motherease rikki are great for nights (and cheap Preloved!)
We also use blueberry coveralls.
Others rave about wool or fleece but I'm not brave!

Nan0second · 27/09/2016 08:40

Also Preloved bamboozles are super cheap and last very well if you need more (£4 a nappy often)

Hufflepuffin · 27/09/2016 09:14

I liked little lambs wraps overnight (the Velcro on the rikkis used to flip up and irritate my baby's tummy!)

My son is 5 weeks old and about 7lbs 5oz. Is it worth us starting with newborn nappies or should I wait until he's bigger to buy some BtP nappies? We've been using disposables and I'm horrified by how many black bags we are putting out but at the same time reusables are a lot more expensive than the Aldi cheapies we use (5/6p per nappy). Looking to get the right balance between environment and cost.

Hufflepuffin · 28/09/2016 12:53

@leonie, are you open to second hand? We can point you in the direction of some good places to get newborn bundles that you can then sell on (or the Nappy Lady does hire kits that are very cheap once you've got your deposit back!).

Your son would have a little growing to do before he'd be in to most birth to potties, I think the Little Lambs are from 10lb (but they say themselves they don't fit properly for a little while).

The cheapest newborn stage nappies are folded muslins in a wrap with a nappy nippa. Prefolds are a close second. You can use normal muslins or the Nappy Lady does specially absobent ones!

You could buy some bambinex teddies in size two from the Nappy Lady as these have poppers on the front to reduce the size (these are only on the ones from the nappy lady) and then buy an appropriately sized wrap on top. These will last you a good long time! I think I also used some bumbles on the newborn setting at this age (and those transition to great night nappies if you start using something else in the day).

I swear I don't work for the Nappy Lady, I buy most of my nappies direct from Little Lamb (and their sized pockets are my favourite if you decide to invest in some small nappies, they fit my son until he was nearly one).

OP posts:
leoniethelioness · 28/09/2016 13:16

Thanks - secondhand is fine as long as there's plenty of life in them! I've joined some Facebook groups and done the Nappy Lady survey but feeling a bit overwhelmed by the choice! Teddies and Bumbles were part of my recommendation!

Hufflepuffin · 28/09/2016 15:31

These were my favourite nappies when my son was small, I'm half tempted to buy them myself even though we're not even ttc number 2! www.clothnappytree.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=124090

They're all covered in fleece so lovely and soft and keep baby's skin nice and dry. You need a wrap with them.

Thanks, Huffle!

CarrotPuff · 30/09/2016 17:34

Anyone knows if TotsBots easyfit are known for leaks?

I have a couple brand new easyfit stars which are brilliant, never had a leak. I bought some older version preloved easy fits and getting lots of leaks between the legs. I can't figure out if it's the fit or PUL is damaged?

Nan0second · 30/09/2016 21:47

Totsbots all leak apart from stars imho.
Check pul by turning inside out and running water over it.
Try boosting with a bamboo but it may well just be that they're not great nappies for all but the lightest wetters (even if they are v pretty!)
