My 6 month old ds has got a really red bum. Ive put loads of nappy rash cream on and tried leaving his nappy off for a while to air it. Ive also tried vaseline.
Today it looks really raw and he's screaming when i touch it to change him.
Does anyone know what i can get that will make this better??

What sort of nappies are you using - cloth or disposable?

Twohootsunderthemistletoe · 21/12/2006 23:28

If it's not clearing it may be worth taking him to the GP. Could be he has an infection with it and he'll need something with a steriod and possibly anti fungal in it which you'll need on prescription.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

im using disposable nappies but im trying to let him go without one for as long as i can to get some air to his bum. It does seem to be clearing up with the metanium but i will keep an eye on it, rang the doctors yesterday and the next appointment is the 2nd jan

Have you tried switching brands? I usually use cloth, but if I use certain brands of disposable ds gets extremely sore, whereas others are fine.

Metanium is great! I make sure I have a tube of it at all times.

I find Bepanthen is good for boy when they DON'T Have nappy rash... Makes Poop much easier to clean off his nutsack! Useless for girls tho.

If it looks at all Um... Pocketed... Asthough the skin is sunken into small sores and open bleeding, take him to the docs. It maybe thrush, DS had it and they prescribed canestan and Metanium... Was gone in 2 days.

Fifi - my dd had a terrible red bum when she was about 16 months and i stopped using wipes and cleaned her bum with cotton balls and water then put baby oil over the whole area - it just seemed the wipes were making it worse and it cleared really quickly!
Its worth a try!

Go to the gp and get a steroid cream as its probably infected now. Mine had a horrible, red, bleeding rash for ages - the cream cleared it up (but I stopped using it cos it said 7 days, and had to go back but am continuing to use it now). Plus ask for Conotrane barrier cream (can get it free on Pharmacy First or about £1.50 for a tube) - its quite water resistant and I think stops the poo from making contact so much (Sudocrem worked before but not now). She nearly has a completely peachy bum again !!

Forgot to add, and we stopped using wipes - cut up a £1 fleece blanket and used those with water instead (semi-disposable - really grotty ones we just chuck away).

Metanium works like magic! And calendula with Vitamin E is very soothing.
