Got my next placement and I am stressed already

Its at a private hospital miles away from my house, I have to get 2 buses, and walk down a really dodgy road in the dark on my own to get there and it will take about an hour to get there I will start at 8am and have to leave the house at 6.30. It just makes the days so long. There is a large hospital just up the road from me so I am annoyed that they have put me so far away when I don't have a car and there is no decent bus route.

I rang up to ask but she just said that I agreed to go anywhere when I started the course, I said would you walk around there on your own at 7am and she said well no I wouldn't but I have a car! Grr.

It sucks, it really does. When I was a student in Exeter doing OT we could be sent ANYWHERE in the country Hello, Grimsby, Isle of sheppy, Tunbridge Wells, Deepest Cornwall etc

I was Student Union president and regularly had student revolts at placement allocation Time. The colleges bottom line was "you agreed to go". Suppose at least you are able to still live at home

For nursing we only go local I don't think I would cope doing physio or OT where they send you anywhere!
I suppose I am annoyed because I know people with cars who they regularly send to the local hospital but they like to put people without cars in places that are out of the way. I will manage though, it probably feels worse than it will be.

Ive been given my next placement too, its really difficult to get there by public transport, but luckily I do drive and there is free parking at this hospital. All of my placements I have been given in the past 18 months (nearly) are all far away from my home. The annoying thing is, they think that because I drive they can send me anywhere, however, I will not pay £12 a day to park my car, because there is no free parking at the hospital, so in fact Im in the same boat as everyone else who doesnt drive and if anything I get sent further from home because I can drive - doesnt mean Im going to use my car though!

its crap isn't it - especially considereing the stress of being on placement.

I remember 4 years ago my aprents making me get in the car on New years day to drive me to tunbridge wells to Pembury hospital in the arsehole of nowhere - I was 23 and crying like a baby!!!! I din't want to be doing mental health, nevermind doing it in the middle of nowhere! The hospital accomodation was deserted - I didn't see another soul for 12 weeks!!! Atleast the accomodation was on site and only a 3 minute walk from the office, but the whole place was surrounded by forest and pitch black from4:30pm!!!

Ah well, atleast it is over now - shame its just taken me a year to find an OT job!

Cant imagine how I would have managed as a mum - big up to you all for giving it a go

smurf, thats crap. It takes the enjoyment out of a placement before its even started. I must say that my uni considers those that are parents and who dont drive first, and give them decent placements. Their idea is that they could potentially lose some bloody good nurses if they make it difficult for them to get to a placement.

SueW · 20/12/2006 13:33

Can you find someone to grab a lift with, even if it means catching a bus to meet them halfway? Might be easier once you get to your placement and get talking to people.

itschrismurftime · 20/12/2006 13:36

My uni appears to just look at who has a car and who doesn't? They are v.unsympathetic.

I dont' have children which does make it easier but I think its disgusting that they make young girls walk around dangerous places on their own at ridiculous times when they don't have to. I just realised I will end up being in town, alone at like 9.30pm as well, fab

I find it strange that they can send you to lots of different hospitals. My uni gave us the option of the 5 trusts they work with and we had to put them in order of preference. All of us in my cohort is in the hospital nearest to them for the whole of their training, so no one has any problems like that.

Just wanted to say sorry that it's so crap for you, when I was training they did this a lot, I have to say most people were succesful in getting it changed. I'm sure when you get on placement your mentor will be sympathetic, it's unneccesary for you to be travelling that far on your own and they wouldn't do it.

Just a thought, say to the Uni, Ok, I'll go, but I'm worried about my personal safety, therefore I will be taking a taxi and claiming the expenses for it, if you can't accomodate those expenses, then you'll have to find me an alternative placement! See your student rep!
