what should i do, she mentioned the chair last time i saw her, if i thought it was ok, she is a bit difficult to say things to at times so i didn't actually say anything which i could kick myself about as it was an ideal opportunity.
it is quite an old chair, should i say the next time i speak to her something like you know the last time we spoke about the high chair well would it be possible to get a harness for it as it would be a bit safer for ds, i think you can get them from mothercare?

If it has some 'D' rings on the chair then you can fit a harness. Mother do them and you can also use them once they are walking. HTH

why don't you get a harness and take with you next time DS is there ? Since she asked you about it she can't really object in any way.

how old is your child?
i barely ever used a harness!

You can fit a harness either using d-rings if already there or there is a Clippasafe one which has fabric retaining loops that can fix around the frame of the seat - like this one .

We had the same problem with my mil - she has an old wooden high chair that she's used for three children and two grandchildren without a harness (and yes one did very nearly fall out of it - only just caught on time ) - she looked at me like I was crazy when I bought a harness and attached it to the chair. She ignores it, I've never seen her use it. She is a lovely grandmother but I have very little trust in her (there have been a few other safety issues), and I don't like her babysitting my youngest dd for this reason, and I find that a real shame.

mustrunmorenakedthroughthesnow · 15/12/2006 10:33

I've never used a harness on the highchair for either of the boys. No accidents yet!

belgo · 15/12/2006 10:36

mustrunmorenakedthroughthesnow - unfortunatley I have children that can climb out of their high chairs from the age of about 6 months, and a hard tiled floor to fall on to (my mil also has a tiled floor). Maybe after a couple of hard falls they would learn their lesson and not climb anymore, but I don't really want to risk it, would rather have peace of mind and children in one piece.

mustrunmorenakedthroughthesnow · 15/12/2006 11:06

sorry; I hope my last post ddint sound too flippant to you. I'm finding it very hard to get my head round the new format, so am shortening all my posts

ds2 hasnt found out how to stand in the chair yet. ds1 didnt do it till about 12 months, and then we changed him into a booster, and he sat still in it )maybe in awe of being with the adults at the table??!!)

marymillington · 15/12/2006 11:09

i've never used a harness either.

but if you feel really strongly about it i would buy one yourself. surely she wouldn't take the huff.

belgo · 15/12/2006 11:11

mustrunmorenakedthroughthesnow - no need for you to apologise! your example illustrates the point that all children are different, and what's necessary for one child might not be for another.

Spidermama · 15/12/2006 11:11

It depends on the chair. I've never bothered putting the harness on with mine as they're kind of jammed in with the table.

belgo · 15/12/2006 11:15

marymillington - my mil did take the huff when I gave her a harness for her high chair, then promptly refused to ever use it.

can you get some reins to attach to it?

22ann · 15/12/2006 20:31

hi, thanks for your messages, it really helps coming on here and having support, i'm busy making new friends at the toddler groups but don't always get chance to have a good chat.
I've got some old reins a friend gave me so i'll see how it goes and possibly take them with us when we visit.
Happy christmas!
