Is it normal for an almost 2 year old to still have a bottle of milk just before bed?

I'm a bit stuck with our bed time routine. We do dinner, bath, milk, brush teeth, stories, bed. Seems to be working pretty well but DD looks weird holding a baby bottle now at almost 2. Any other cups are just too messy and high risk for her to be having upstairs with the carpet etc but I don't want to bring her downstairs where all the distractions are just for her her have her milk.

She has about 7-8oz cows milk as I'm helping her into pjs after bath. Very heavy full nappies every morning and I guess we might be moving on to potty training fairly soon so maybe I should be reducing the amount she drinks late in the eve.

What do other people do? Do you just drop the evening milk somehow?

Bedtime milk here too at nearly 4. If it works then go with the flow...

Why is it that weird that even water on its own stimulates a child? Confused Water is fun. Playing in water is fun. Some kids love a bath and get a bit hyper afterwards. You still need to bathe them sometimes, and you can't always move the bath to hours before bedtime.

I'd just stop it cold turkey. DC might complain for a few nights but will soon adapt. I think it's better for them to learn to fall asleep without needing a bottle.

Your DC might not drink the same amount of milk from a sippy cup but might have an increased appetite at meal times.

My 3.5 year old has a bottle before bed. She sleeps through so I won't stop this until school now.

Honestly 001 if you could see this kid with a bowl of plain water. He has tantrums when I won't let him sit at the sink and run the tap. He is obsessed with the stuff!

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 18/12/2015 15:12

Water stimulates mine too.
Have you forgotten that all children are different, 00100001, and that what is fine for one may over stimulate another?

Highlove · 19/12/2015 06:37

Another one who has a toddler that gets stimulated by her bath. I'll assume from 001's post that it's because of my inferior parenting.Wink

My 2.5 year old still has a bottle before bed, he won't drink milk our of anything else. It makes him sleepy and after 2.5 years of being a bad sleeper I am not going to take that away anytime soon if I helps him sleep!
He also gets hyper after a bath, always has done even when he was tiny. All kids are different!

nearly 9yo and 5yo have a glass of milk at bedtime still

PipersOrange · 22/12/2015 10:04

I had a bottle before bed until I was nearly 10. My dad used to say he put sleeping powder in it if we were having trouble sleeping (he obviously didn't but it worked!). I've got a nearly 2yo ds and wasn't planning on stopping any time soon

Mine loves his, & I won't interfere for another while. Too busy trying to deal with the epic tantrums & constant sickness over the past few months.

My 2.3 year old has milk in a sippy cup with stories downstairs after her bath and has done ever since she stopped breastfeeding at 12 months. She's never liked bottles but the milk and stories combination seems to work well for her this way.

Pinkvici22 · 29/12/2015 08:41

Bedtime milk here too at 3.4...in a cup though. Was a sippy cup from around 12 months once we switched to cows milk, and now it's a normal cup. She's not quite dry at night and it's just something that settles her!
