Hi there

My son is almost 20 months and he used to sleep about 11 for 1=1.5 hours. Now when I put him to bed in the day he doesn't seem to want to sleep. Should I change this to late afternoon say 3pm? He does not eat very much either and wanted to find out what others similar are eating for breakfast/lunch and dinner?

Would appreciate any advice thank you.

hi foxy1
my daughter is 21 months old. Currently she is waking between 6.45 and 7.15, sleeping again about 1pm for 90 mins and then bed again at 7pm ish.

However, some days it doesn't go like that at all. Today she fell asleep in the car at 11.30am and only slept for 45 mins but has woken up quite happily.
A couple of days recently there has been so much going on that she hasn't slept at all.

I personally wouldn't be so drastic as to change ti to 3pm but perhaps you could try moving it to 12 noon, or 12.30.
What signs does he usually give you to show he is tired?

My son is also almost 20 months. I guess all babies are different but since you ask:
He wakes up between 7am and 8am. He eats most of a Weetabix and a banana and one slice of toast.
He goes to bed at 10.30am, and sleeps for about an hour and a half.
He has something like an avacado, a piece of cheese and a slice of bread for lunch, followed by something like a mince pie.
For tea, he has a small bowl of something like pasta, or stew followed by a yoghurt.
He normally eats 3 satsumas and a box of raisins at some point in the day.
The food I've listed is what he is offered, a lot of it often ends up in the bin. Somedays he picks at his food and hardly eats anything, others he eats like a horse and asks for seconds.
He goes to bed at 7pm

My 23 month old usually gets up around 7.30-8am.
2 weetabix for breakfast, tangerine mid morning.
usually vegtables and some kind of meat/fish for lunch. 2 hour nap either before or after lunch.
Dinner is potatoes vegtables and meat/fish again, with yoghurt and fruit afterwards.
Supper is another 2 weetabix!
Usually eats all of the above, but has off days.

Bed around 8.30pm.

DD did this around your Ds's age foxy. I was advised to abide by the 5 hour rule (that is, five hours from when he woke up he'll be ready to sleep) It worked for Dd, so when she got up at 7am, I'd try her for a nap around 12. She still sticks to this.
Eating is erratic. She tends to have fruit and toast for breakfast (lots of fruit, not much toast); pasta or meat and veg for dinner; a snack of fruit or a biscuit about 3pm, tea is almost always cheese on toast because she seems to be addicted!

my 23mth old sleeps 12hrs a night from about 6.30pm to 6.30am with a one hour sleep in the afternoon at about 1pm after his lunch. He's not a big eater first thing so tends to eat breakfast with me after i've dropped off the older children. toast and marmite and fruit. Lunchtime he has your typical sandwich/yoghurt combo and dinner a hot meal of marcaroni cheese/stew/lasagne etc you get the idea!
A month ago he had a anti-sleeping week where he caused me great concern............ I thought my days of a free hour in the afternoon were over but a girlfriend said to me to stick with it and put him to bed regardless and he is now sleeping like a baby agian!!!

DS was 20 months yesterday, He wakes about 8 ish, toast, dry cereal and sometimes a banana for breakfast. Lunch and dinner he eats what we do - my cooking skills are limited, so lots of casseroles, pasta, shepherds pie, that kind of stuff. He snacks on fruit and ricecakes A LOT thoughout the day but is dead skinny! Bath at 6.30, bed by 7.15. Until recently he would nap from about 1.30 for a couple of hours or so but recently we are having a bit of a struggle with that, guess he is reaching an age where he just doesn't need it. I really miss 2 hours of peace in the afternoon...

My dd2 (20 mths) gets up around 6.30-7pm, has a reasonable breakfast of ReadyBrek and some toast, but often that's about it until dinner. Rarely eats lunch, maybe half a sandwich. She goes down for a sleep at midday for 2-3 hours, sometimes has a banana when she wakes up. Then a good dinner, eg casserole/rice/pasta/veg etc, then fruit, then yoghurt and occasionally a biscuit/cake. Usually asleep by 7pm.

How much milk are they supposed to be drinking at this stage - can't remember? Mine has about 2-3 cups (16oz?).

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I don't know whether the fact that he has a cold at the moment means he finds it harder to settle in the daytime and therefore does not want to sleep?? ( he has had this for a week and sounds quite chesty now. I have been giving him calpol and menthol stuff rubbed onto his chest etc to help him breath). Should I take him to the doctor?????

My son normally wakes anything from 7.30 -8.30 very erratic. For breakfast I give him either 1 weetabix/porridge/ shreddies but if I let him feed himself he will eat about 6 spoons and then gets bored - so I normally take over but he does eat very much. Lunch I give hime scrambled egg with toast or sandwich with cheese and fruit or yogurt for dessert, raisons biscuit snack.Tea mash potatoe with beans/ cheese or pasta with roasted veg, spag bol etc. I find he is so fussy so I end up giving him the same things to make sure he eats something. Alot of you mention that you give your toddlers casseroles- what do you put in your?

I have been trying to put my son to bed later and later as he does not seem to want to go to bed in the day. He used to sleep at 11.15 and today for example I tried 12.00, 1.00, 3.00 and just would not settle. I think I will just persist with maybe sticking to an after lunch nap. 2nd baby due next month so I know I will savour this time.

Thanks again everyone!!

My youngest is now 2.5yrs but at 20mths she was doing:
7:30pm-7am
then 12:30-2:30
She still sleeps from 1:30-2:30 now sometimes til 3pm,and her night time sleep is the same
for eating,at that age(tho still pretty similar) she was doing:
7am-8oz milk
8am-toast,cereal and milk or porridge with fruit mixed in.usually a piece of fruit as well
10am-piece of fruit
12-'light'lunch-i.e sandwiches/toasties/jacket potato etc then fruit as dessert
3pm-piece of fruit,small biscuit
5:30-cooked dinner.fruit mixed with natural yogurt or fruit pot
7pm-8oz milk

mamalocco · 14/12/2006 22:04

Today's chicken casserole:

fry some onion & garlic
added leeks, mushrooms, red pepper, celery
tin of tomatoes, dash of soya sauce
2pts of chicken stock
chicken thighs

Simmered for an hour and served with rice.

Two out of three of them ate it - which is a pretty good result in this house .

tassis · 14/12/2006 22:06

we found 1-3pm was a good time for a nap.

ds did this from ages of about 1 and 3

jeangenie · 14/12/2006 22:09

it could be just the cold he has - my DD (also 20m) always goes crazy on the sleep front when she has a cold. Have you tried raising the head of his cot? helps them breathe a bit easier

(ordinarily she sleeps for about 2 hours from 1 to 3pm and eats tonnes)
