How many times do you change nappies over night?

As the title says really, I've got 6 week old DD startung to sleep quite well through the night. So I'm wondering how many times should I be checking and changing, it's the only time I get to sleep so stuck as what to do? Do I wake her and change or change when she wakes for a feed? Throughout the day I've been checking roughly every 2 hour or even hourly since she's got a habit of having a wee not long after a fresh nappy.

Sorry long post just don't know what to do really.

P.s nappy rash is a problem recently, any tips? Apart from changing regularly and keeping area dry, currently applying johnsons baby 3 in 1 bottom cream.

Only change if it's a poi or do soaked it's wet her clothes.

Son was BF and fed 2-4 hours nightly till 6 months old, I would check nappy every feed and change if pooped

Once he started sleeping longer at around 10 months I check him before I go to bed 10pm then if he woke in night I'd also check him again

We had a bad period of nappy rash around 11 months so I set a alarm for 2 hourly and changed him 2 hourly through the night for a week to help clear it up.

Topsyloulou · 09/12/2015 15:24

I changed DS before a feed in the night so he could go straight back to sleep after a feed. Metanium has definitely been the best nappy rash cream for us. Just apply sparingly at every nappy change until it has cleared up & as much nappy free time as possible. Hope it clears up soon.

I find my DD, 11 weeks, tends to poo whilst feeding, it's to do with the peristalsis: eating triggers reactions and motions lower down the digestive system.
She rarely poos when asleep and the few times she has I have heard her as she does really loud, wet sounding blow offs. She's a classy girl Wink.

She's sleeping for 4-6 hours at a time at night, I generally feel her nappy through her clothes to see how wet it is, a lot of the time I estimate there's only one wee in there and so don't wake her more by changing her, she might feed for five minutes then go down again. I use sudocrem to keep rashes at bay and I only use cotton wool and water or water wipes.

Suzy4321 · 09/12/2015 15:48

I changed to pampers night nappies and she goes through 7 till 7. Unless pooed. They are more money but only use one at nighttime

jaggythistlez · 09/12/2015 15:49

Only changed if they poop, unless they seemed soaking or sprung a leak.

If they didn't settle after a feed I might change just in case.

ExasperatedAlmostAlways · 09/12/2015 15:49

After my first I realised you dont need to change them in the night. unless they have pooed or have a really big nappy that could leak if left.

ExasperatedAlmostAlways · 09/12/2015 15:51

Metanium is also the best iv found for nappy rash. You get it in tesco in the baby nappy changing aisle beside suncream etc. Avoid Johnsons too as it blocks their pores.

scandichick · 09/12/2015 15:55

The type of nappy makes a difference too - with DD1 we used newborn nappies for ages, and had to change them at every wee as she went berserk at the feeling of wet nappy.

When some kind soul told us to swap to baby dry (or whatever the equivalent is for your preferred brand) it was a revelation... As soon as DD2 stopped pooing in the night I stopped changing nappies until morning - made everyone sleep much better.

So I wouldn't change her nappy at all if you can get away with it.

Annarose2014 · 09/12/2015 15:56

I stopped changing them during the night the minute he stopped pooing during the night. That was pretty early on, aroud 3 months or so? Haven't changed a nappy at night since.

Nappy rash is wee getting on the skin. Sudocream clears it up but we found vaseline (or any similar gloopy balm) was amazing for keeping it at bay as the wee literally glides off it and into the nappy.

Starspread · 09/12/2015 15:59

Mine is 4 weeks; so far I've only been getting up to change him at night if he still seems grizzly and uncomfortable after a feed (or if I hear him properly filling his nappy during a feed!); if he drops happily off to sleep after nursing I figure he can't be that uncomfortable and would let me know if he wanted things to be different.

Annarose2014 · 09/12/2015 15:59

Green pampers for the win! They absorb GALLONS. Also I recently found out that the + sign after the size means extra absorbant. It doesn't have anything to do with the size at all.

Mrscog · 09/12/2015 16:12

I only changed them if they woke up. Use a good barrier cream in case she poos and doesn't wake up, and enjoy your sleep :) !

Artandco · 09/12/2015 16:20

I used to dream feed and change nappy just before I went to bed, so around 11pm. If they hadn't pooed and woke they then slept through until morning without a change

We used reusables very early on as disposables caused a rash.

poocatcherchampion · 09/12/2015 17:11

I have a 6 seeker as well and last night he didn't poo when he woke up to feed so I didn't change him. It was very exciting!

If nappy rash persists I normally call thrush but I wonder whether she is getting sore from over enthusiastic changing / use of wipes.

Only change when they leak or poo!

BasinHaircut · 09/12/2015 17:34

Chamomile tea does wonders for nappy rash. Bathe them in it, a square of muslin soaked in it and placed in the nappy if it's bad, and I usually brew some up and cool, put in a water bottle and squirt on cotton wool instead of using wipes until it is gone.

Honestly, it sounds like silly lentil weavery but it works!

I find sudocreme makes nappy rash worse. its got lavender in it which some people claim irritates nappy rash and I'm inclined to agree

waterrat · 09/12/2015 17:35

When you have your second child you will never change them at night! Nappies last fine from 7pm till.mornjng.

Plateofcrumbs · 09/12/2015 17:44

Change as little as you can get way with (basically no poo, not utterly sodden, baby happy = don't change). Disposables are pretty horrendous for the environment so it's greener, cheaper and less hassle all round!

ffffffedup · 09/12/2015 18:43

I never changed in the night unless it was a poo nappy and even then I tried to change before a feed rather than after, it's a couple of extra mins crying but preferable to waking them up after a feed and not settling back off to sleep

bittapitta · 09/12/2015 18:55

Are you waking yourself up in the night OP to check her nappy even if she is asleep?! Hmm sleep when the baby sleeps still applies at 6 months!

randomsabreuse · 09/12/2015 19:00

Mine fusses if too wet (often barely damp) and I've never missed hearing a poo - generally audible across the room. Night I only check (albeit at high speed - amazing what an effective alarm it is after a few escapes) poos or if fussing.

Interestingly she's less cross about damp reuseable nappies and HATES pampers baby dry - usually rejected within 90 minutes. Aldi best for her. She used to fuss before the newborn indicator was even showing!

I do tend to check post farts as the size 3s are a bit borderline on fit and capacity (marginally too big and capacity for poos very marginal!) so splitting the poo over 2 nappies saves washing!

cornishglos · 09/12/2015 19:30

With my ds wet/ dirty nappies never bothered him so I'd change before a feed, but not every feed. He'd often wet through but never complained. And he never got nappy rash.
Now i have a newborn dd and I wonder what's best, like the OP. She seems to poo constantly. When she wakes to feed she has pooed, then after feeding she poos again. If I change her after it takes ages for her to get to sleep again. If I don't she gets a sore bum.
I'm using a nappy rash spray from boots which seems really good.
So same quandry as OP. But in answer to the original question, 1 - 3 times during the night. She's 5 weeks.
CAn't wait til she starts pooing less!

MrsHenryCrawford · 09/12/2015 20:48

Try different nappies. Pampers brought my 6 weeker out in rash. Heard that some babies are allergic to the stay dry crystals in them- not sure how true this is but he's much improved in the Aldi/lidl /tesco nappies

MrsA2015 · 09/12/2015 23:57

cornishglos I know exactly what you mean! bittapitta nope not waking, sleeping when she sleeps which is pretty well recently hence the thread, didn't know if I should wake to check if she's done a poo because didn't want the rash to get worse.

Out of everything didn't know nappy changing would be a cuffufle Blush

I only changed if they pooed. Changing a nappy after a night feed only made the DC harder to settle!
