Best formula for newborn?

I'll be a first time mum so need advice on what formula is best for newborn and where is best to buy it from. I've decided not to breastfeed for many reasons despite it being pushed on me by health professionals. I will give it a go at first for the colostrum etc but ff is what I want to do long term. When should I buy it too as 30 weeks at the moment?

Well obviously the chemical processes arent the same but you can't say that it's only a problem for ff babies because its not. Problems can arise with any child. Stop scaremongering. And red meat does not cause cancer. Neither does chocolate, or milk, or sex or the sun. There's risk of cancer no matter what you do.

Anyway. Got to go, I have to take care of my DD who is taking the oh so poisonous antibiotics for a chest infection, so yeah Hmm I'll be sure to mention to the doctor how he's killing my child by giving her medicine because she may have already had antibiotics in her breakfast cereal.

jipjap · 09/12/2015 01:40

Yeah, read into it whichever way you choose.

ffffffedup · 09/12/2015 04:20

Blah blah blah jipjap

Whatever milk you decide to use OP I can't recommend enough getting a tommee tippee perfect prep machine it's fabulous, you can use any types of bottles with it too it doesn't need to be tommee tippee ones

I am Shock at the whole feeding formula makes autistic kids. How DARE you suggest it causes that. My Dp is autistic and he was breastfed exclusively till 18 month so you can shove that little ' fact ' of yours up your arse.

op I mix fed and dd has never had an issue.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/12/2015 05:38

I wish people would stop guilt tripping mothers. I work with young mums and I always tell them that my reasons for BFing were that I'm fat, cheap and lazy.

The baby sucks the calories out, I don't have to sterilize, prep, wait, worry or have bags full of stuff and it's free. We really should start being realistic rather than making everyone miserable.

Gooseysgirl · 09/12/2015 05:56

To get back to the original question HmmWe used Hipp Organic with both kids. If you're worried about local availability you can order it direct from Hipp. Congrats on your pregnancy and enjoy being a mum, it's fab Smile

Another vote for Aptamil from me, and to ignore jipjap.

Gileswithachainsaw · 09/12/2015 07:08

formula is great stuff. the baby whi had no breast milk is now the child without the asthma and eczema.

if I'd known bow little difference it would make and the grief I could have saved myself I'd never have even bothered trying fir the first baby. needless to say I had zero inclination to go there second time around..

op I highly recommend MAM bottles. neither of mine got on with Tommy tippee but MAM were fab. and can be individually sterilised. you measure out water in the ld. put the teat on the base (which unscrews) put lid over top and zap in microwave. voila.

Alisvolatpropiis · 09/12/2015 07:38

I second MAM bottles being great!

Tangoandcreditcards · 09/12/2015 07:41

Oh and another recommendation for the Tommee Tippee perfect prep. It only does feeds over 4oz, so ready milk is good for the very early days when feeds are smaller & more frequent.

It's compatible with most bottles. I liked the NUK bottles, mainly because the little "starter" formula kits use them so DS was used to the teats. Some hospitals won't provide milk (my last one did all brands, this one doesn't at all), check with your midwife if you need to pack it.

Also please don't feel judged by HCP or anyone else (it's v easy to feel your choice/need to FF is being attacked when someone disagrees with you, just think of it as a matter of their opinion and let it go, most people in the world don't care enough to judge you for it). Your main job for 8 weeks is to get milk into a tiny person, if you're doing that, you're winning.

We used Hipp, never had a problem getting it, they sell it in Tesco.

Cow and gate and Aptamil are made by the same company, just advertised differently. It's all much of a muchness.

comeagainforbigfudge · 09/12/2015 22:59

Hipp organic organic here organic here as well

And perfect prep. It's amazing Xmas Grin

We've went through many bottles with our colicky, reflux-y baby. Now using NUK bottles. Love the teats on them.

I'd get some infacol or dentinox as well OP incase baby is an air gulper 😃

Good luck!

comeagainforbigfudge · 09/12/2015 23:00

Whoops! Phone went a bit mental there!

NiNoKuni · 10/12/2015 09:38

I think we tried everything but SMA, they're all much of a muchness. DS has ended up on Aptamil Pepti due to suspected CMPA, though!

Deffo get the Perfect Prep, saves so much faffing. Another MAM fan here as well. Lansinoh bottles are OK but the teats just fall apart, they're too soft. With Tommee Tippee teats, DS just managed to suck them flat so the flow stopped.

We’re on SMA comfort after having an issue with Aptamil. This milk has 100% suited out LO so wouldn’t change, however- try and go for one where you can buy ready made bottles as they are really handy sometimes (SMA comfort doesn’t have this) we were originally planning to use cow and gate as read that it was the same as Aptamil but cheaper, I then had a change of heart at the end and tried to BF, day two in hospital after a shitty labour, I was too knackered and just stopped completely and used whatever the hospital had....and felt so much better, could actually go home, and LO got to actually feed!) so all the FF bashing really should stop!

Another vote for the perfect prep machine, just follow the cleaning routing, get Wilkinson’s filters as they are the same but a third of the price, and open the machine up every few weeks to check all is clean.

glueandstick · 14/01/2018 23:26

I preferred aptimil in the square boxes as they came with a little rest for the scoop and the box fitted more neatly on the worktop.

OnNaturesCourse · 15/01/2018 11:34

Aptamil is what we use but only because that's what the hospital gave us.

HV later said that they are all the same as they have to meet regulations - the only difference is the hungry milk etc, and these types shouldn't be used until much later. Also that we should only use stage 1. The stage 2, 3 etc (follow on milks) are a waste of money, they are a marketing scam and simply giving stage 1 will do even when baby grows and starts weaning etc.

Basically don't let it overwhelm you, they are all the same in basics and can be changed if needed. We stuck with Aptamil solely because DD had been on it from day one and we knew the brand but according to HV we could save money as even Lidls own brand etc are the same...and much cheaper
