my ds is 23 months old. he can eat finger foods but can't really feed himself with a spoon or fork. he faffs around with the spoon, turning it upside down etc and holds it by the very tip before trying to get the thing in his mouth. by this stage the food has fell off the spoon. he's never been a big eater, he didnt start eating solids really until he was 13 months old (despite my trying since he was 6 months old). there are only so many foods he will eat. i really think he should be feeding himself by this stage! and eating more too. any advice?

put a bib on him... cover the floor.... give him a spoon and let him get on with it (making as much mess as necessary!) my 15 month old charge also does what u say with normal baby spoons (especially those with a long handle!).... but can feed himself near perfectly with these spoons that are bent about 45 degrees in the handle... designed to make self feeding easier...

i dont know what brand they are but would be worth looking out for as they really help my little one!

i think it all depends on their co-ordination skills. my dd1 is 21 months and can spoon feed herself with things like yoghurt or cereal but has problems with peas, beans and veg. he will get there in the end just keep giving him the spoon and he will soon work it out xxx

i have just googled it and looked at every site i can think of but cant find a link which has these sort of bent weaning spoons... sorry...

does anyone know what i mean?

I think the bent feeding spoons are Miriam Whatshername ones. I'm sure I bought them in either Boots or Toys R Us... It sounds like it's maybe disinterest in food though rather than lack of co-ordination. Don't worry too much!
