Can you give Apple to an 11 month old or is it a choking hazard? Thanks

Do they have any teeth yet? I have grated apple before for ds

notenidskitchen · 26/11/2015 17:03

I didn't as I was scared to death of him choking.

Either grate or make apple sauce.

When they get a bit older they are great actually, as they take ages to eat!

I was reasonably gung-ho at BLW but raw carrot and raw apple were a no for me.

She's got 8 teeth but I'm a bit worried! She tries to grab mine, I've let her a couple of times and she can get a few small bits out of it!

My 9mo only has his bottom 2 teeth I let him have some slices of apple without the skin he basically just sucked it and spat any bits out

scaredofthecity · 27/11/2015 06:45

I've been giving my son chunks of with skin off since he was 6 months, he sucks and nibbles it. I never even thought of it as a choking hazard Blush

I think a whole (peeled) Apple is much safer than small pieces or slices - then they can just scrape off some with their teeth and literally won't bite more than they can chew. My two were late teethers though so I don't think I started with apples until after 12 months

I have a picture of my 6 month old DD gnawing on an apple... Never really thought of it as a hazard. She's 2 now anyway so it didn't do any harm thankfully. She still loves apples!

Zogthebiggestdragon · 27/11/2015 20:57

Depends on the child. I gave my daughter sliced apple at 6 months and she loved it. We moved on to whole unpeeled apples pretty early. I used to share them with her but now she refuses and just eats the whole thing! But a friends daughter, same age, gagged on sliced Apple every time she tried it until recently (21 months).
I would just go for it and see what happens. It was especially good when teething I found.

TesticleOfObjectivity · 28/11/2015 00:10

I was giving mine sliced fruit and veg at that age. And toast which is quite hard. She didn't have problems with it.

Apple was one of the very few things I was wary of. We did blw and DD did brilliantly with most foods I chucked her way, however I stuck to cooked apple until 12mo then switched to whole apples. She hated the cooked stuff, but loves gnawing on a whole raw one. As a PP said, she just scrapes it off and even if she did take a bite I don't think it'd be big enough to cause her any bother. She's nearly 18mo now and I've still to give her apple slices. I'm sure she'd be fine but I saw another similarly-aged child choke on them at a playgroup and it's made me nervous!

I give my 11 month old whole apples and have done for a while. Keeps him busy for ages.
