Nappy rash creams and cloth nappies

Even though ds' nappy rash clears with cloth nappies I'm still waiting for my full order to come in and he is in disposables one day and cloth the next. The natural Weleda nappy cream I have (and Metanium but this is used much less) is yellow and unless I really really scrub at the nappies it doesn't come out and leaves a stain. I put vaseline on routinely which is great cos it's clear, but occasionally I have to use one of the yellow creams.

What do you do to get it out? Or what do you use instead?

Many thanks

I use Sudocrem which does seem to come out on a 60 degree wash. But I could't get any in the supermarket the other day and have Metanium instead, so I guess I'm going to have this problem shortly.

Hi Kittypickle, yes, I used to use sudocream too and found it came out in the wash. I read on MN about trying vaseline and find it's the best yet (but this did coincide with moving to cloth nappies and I find ds's bottom much drier since moving to a fleece lined nappy). I'm wondering if I have to resolve myself to having stained nappies and if it's really worth all the extra effort to battle to keep them white!

I use a disposable liner, so the cream goes on the liner but not on the nappy.

Sorry, no ideas on how to get the stains out but I'm sold on organics baby.com lavender salve. Have never used anything else. It doesn't stain, smells great and can be used anywhere on little bods. At the slightest pinkyness, I put a nats whisker on and it clears up within the hour - honest!!!

kiwicath · 16/05/2004 18:15

... use fleece liners as well.

karen99 · 16/05/2004 21:26

Thanks for the tips. As I'm using Bumbles you don't need any liners as the inside is all fleece. Maybe this is the one draw back with them. However, I've just put a scoop of Vanish Oxyclean in with this last load and it's cleared up loads of stains. Maybe that'll get out the Metanium aswell... Just don't want the Oxyclean to aggravate his bottom..

Kiwicath, I have that salve but only use it on ds' body! Never thought to use it down below as well. May give that a try..

I use boots basic Zinc and Castor Oil cream as a barrier and it is great and comes out fine at 60 degrees.

susanmt · 17/05/2004 15:50

Oh and the best thing for getting baby poo stains (you know, the yellow ones you think are going to be there for ever) out of cloth is the sun, if we ever get any!

Freddiecat · 18/05/2004 15:04

wELL WE DO THE OCCASIONAL (sorry) 90 degree wash with some Napisan and an extra long rinse which does get rid of stains.

MrsDoolittle · 29/05/2004 13:56

Have you tried white vinegar on the stains? My dm swears by it (and she has tried every cleaning product on the market) for removing ALL stains - often in the carpet!!
It was also suggested by tha nappy lady. HTH

I use Metanium and if by chance it goes on the towel after a bath, I apply a bit of Biotex spray, cold water and Fairy anti-bac washing up liquid and off it comes.
I use disposable nappies so all this washing doesn't apply to me, but if there is a leak of poo from nappy on clothes, I rinse with cold water, squirt on some Biotex and apply anti bac Fairy and rub with running cold water to get out as much as possible. I then soak overnight in Napisan and it works wonders!! It is non biological and safe. You can put it in the machine as well but I haven't put in a serious stain in the washing machine, I have always sorted it out with a good soak.
I generall use Morhulin and Metanium only if a little sore. Vaseline is good, just difficult to get in a tube although I was given this at the hospital.

Don't know how relevant this is, but I got a recipe from the nappy lady site for chamomile tea and honey wiping liquid (just a chamomile teabag and a spoon of honey in a jug of boiling water and then let it cool). Ds has never had nappy rash so long as I've kept on using it, but gets a bit red whenever i stop. I think it's mainly the honey which heals everything up. I was sceptical at first, but now I swear by it and tell everyone at any opportunity!!

kiwicath · 04/06/2004 10:49

Yep, agree about the honey thing. In NZ, Manuka honey creams etc are all the rage. Magical healing properties apparently.

hovely · 05/06/2004 20:05

tbh I'm not bothered about stains. Why does it matter to you? Surely the wrap covers it all up? Then again I am always looking for the easy way...

karen99 · 06/06/2004 15:16

Hi Hovely, yes, have gotten alot more relaxed about stains since this first posting!

Currently trying a bit of honey in with the cammomile tea mix to see if it clears up the redness. Thought this had gone with the cloth nappies, but it's back. Perhaps as ds is drinking more the nappy needs to be changed more often..

Squigglesmum, do you add a bit of oil in the mix too?
