I just had my ds four weeks ago (I'm 20 now, 19 when I fell pregnant). I was at uni, with two semesters left but the plan to stick around doing post-grad, when I found out I was pregnant. I finished one semester, but have deferred the rest of my degree.

DetentionGrrrl · 06/12/2006 05:20

and it was choice- DS was planned.

Wallace · 06/12/2006 07:54

snap to kama's post. Are we leading parallel lives?

marialuisa · 06/12/2006 07:59

Had DD whilst at Uni, not planned.

Very good friend had her DD and then went to Uni. Again, not planned.

SchneeBallFight · 06/12/2006 08:01

I did an HND before I had my DSs then they were defnitely planned and I decided was going to retrain when they were in school. I have already started my degree though and they are only 3y4m and 23m. I can do it now because the degree I wanted to do is offered online so I dont need childcare. After my degree I will do postgrad teaching qualification and my DSs will be almost 8 and 6 so I will be able to work.

gigglinggoblin · 06/12/2006 08:12

i had ds1 at 19, no plans to go to uni but then decided to do it after having ds2. i did 1st year while pg with ds3 and things have been a bit difficult since then, am still only half way through 2nd year and ds4 is due in feb so not sure if i will get back or not. if i do go back i think i may change degree and wait a few years. having kids made me want to do it as i wanted to be able to give them things which i wasnt bothered about for myself. if i hadnt had kids i dont think i would have gone at all

xmasmummy · 06/12/2006 10:30

i did my a levels when pg with ds1 and uni two years ago. was nearly 18 when ds1 was born now 25 with four kids

Thaigal · 07/12/2006 00:01

I had my first son when I was 17 and then my 2nd at 19. I never had any career ambition at that age, I just wanted to be a mum.

However my youngest is now 5 and at school and my attitude has changed completely so I have decided to go for a career in social work and have registered with the open university and plan to do a degree with them.

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 07/12/2006 01:57

quootie what does pretty much mean? sorry but i am not allowed to assume what you mean i have to know exactly what you all mean for my research to be valid.

oh right Well, my priorities changes when I met DH and just wanted to be a mum etc. I saw my sister go to uni and get her degree which she will never use, she now lives back at home with my mum! Thing is, I have until 65+ to get a career, but 35 onwards my fertility will more than likely drop... and when I look back on my life, id rather have had children than a career, if I could chose. I am young enough to remember most my childhood, and personally think it will benefit me bringing up children. When DS is 18, ill have nearly paid off the mortgage and still only be 37... If id have gone to Uni, I would still be a stay at home mum, so Ive just saved myself the debt I didnt plan my live like that when I was 18... it wasnt planned exactly at the time, but not a mistake... It was planned that way about 3 months before DS was conceived

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 07/12/2006 03:57

ah so when you were preg you decided youd like to go to uni.

OP posts:
Quootiepie · 07/12/2006 16:06

no, I wanted to go to Uni... but when I met DH, I decided uni could wait a while...

LittleSarah · 07/12/2006 16:16

No, not planned.

Have dd (2.7) and started uni when she was 1.5... did go to uni before, didn't like course, dropped out, went travelling, worked, got pregnant (accident!), went to uni.

Really enjoying it.

Not really. I went to university at 17, finished all exams at 21, married 21, baby at 22 so still children after university. But even so 22 is relatively young. I know people who have gone to university and qualified in thier 40s even having brought up children they had in their teens. In some ways it's a better choice physically to have children at that age.
