Hello. DC1 who is 12 is starting to bemoan holiday activity clubs. He attends a great sports camp with his siblings and they cater for children up to 14 years old. My son would like to stay at home from next year. Technically I have no objection, he's very sensible boy, uses his initiative well and can prepare himself a basic meal. My problem is left to his own devices he'd be sat on the sofa with PS3, iPad and phone ALL DAY LONG, EVERYDAY. I've told him I will only consider it if he ropes in friends for daily activities i.e. swimming, bowling, movies, football up the park but I just don't believe he'll do it without me standing over him. So working parents what do your pre/young teens do during the holidays?

My mum would wake us up before she left for work and leave a list of jobs to be done. Sometimes we would get paid for it, others not.
Preparing dinner or going out for a little shop was normally on the list.
The only time the list didn't appear was if we had plans to see friends.

I'm on mat leave at the moment but will have a similar issue with my ds1 who is 12 when I go back. I know he will be sat ALL day on his xbox left to his own devices. During school holidays I have literally had to chuck him out to get fresh air and engage with friends in the flesh (rather than online!). One thing that seems to be working is letting him earn money doing chores so he can go out to do more things.

You could always hide the ps4 and ipad... Halloween Grin . Is it possible to set timers on them via parental controls?
