Advice needed please - teething

Hi, my baby girl is 15 weeks old and is already displaying signs of teething - flushed teeth, constantly chewing hand and putting everything in her mouth, irritable, dribbling. I've tried giving her a Sophie la Giraffe toy to chew on but she won't take it. She's not really at the stage yet where she's grabbing at things/holding things. I'd appreciate some advice on some things I can give her to ease the discomfort. I'm going to buy some Bonjela teething gel tomorrow. Also, is it ok to give her Calpol occasionally?

Many thanks

Sarah

sorry I was meant to say flushed cheeks not flushed teeth!

Occasional calpol won't do any harm and I do rely on it more now that DS is one. Have you tried anbesol liquid or nelsons teething powders? DS used to calm with the teething powders or chomping on a damp flannel/cloth (especially if it had been in the fridge).

I did find that anbesol was easier to apply than bonjela btw.

There are little teething rings, that are baby mouth shaped with tiny toothbrush bristles, so they can chew down on them, which can help.

I find anbusol liquid easier to put on gums than the gel. Also found teething powders such as nelsons teetha, or Ashton's and parsons good with ds1 and dd, but have had to avoid with ds2 as he's cmpi and they've got lactose in (they're both homeopathic).
Bickie pegs are very hard biscuits, (just flour and water I think), which are a good shape for them to chew down on.

Mostly available in asda etc.

Teething rings (gel filled type) very cold from fridge. Cold cucumber sticks to munch on once you start weaning.

They can have both ibuprofen and paracetamol from 12 weeks. I find ibuprofen is better for teething.

Would she chew on a chilled flannel? It's nice and rough on gums and easier to grasp than a toy

I've used adult ambesol liquid on both of mine - cuts the crying dead, really effective. The baby teething gels slide off. I personally think you should just give pain relief as often as required (according to directions of course) - no point rationing it out grudgingly if they're in pain

Thank you all for your great suggestions. With regards to the cold flannel, is it ok to use cold water straight from the tap or does it need to be cool boiled water?

Many thanks

Sarah

I wouldn't use calpol unless she's really in pain but I found with my ds that he was drooling and flushed cheeks for a few months before any teeth came through

I am on dc3, so water was from the tap for him with the flannel. Maybe others will recommend differently.

polkadotdelight · 19/10/2015 21:55

We just used tap water too if Im honest. Bickiepegs are good, you've reminded me to get some more but I think 15 weeks is a bit little to get the benefit from them. My DS was never interested in the teething rings but when we started weaning he loved one of those net bag things with cold grapes in.

Great, thank you. I'm going to try a cold flannel and Anbesol for now and see how it goes. I really appreciate all your help and advice, thank you so much.

Good luck. I used to wring out a batch of clean wet flannels/muslins each morning and store them in a tupperware tub in the fridge for the day. If it works you will need a little stock of them.

Hello, does anyone know if it is ok to use Anbesol and Nelsons teething granules or Ashton & Parsons infants powders together? My poor baby is really irritable. I have tried a cold flannel to chew on but she just won't take it. I tried Nelsons teething granules this morning and Anbesol this evening and neither have helped. I'm thinking that perhaps if I give her both the Anbesol and granules together, it might just do the trick.

Thank you!

Hi sarah, personally I would give a dose of calprofen to dc3 when the anbesol isn't doing much, but he's 12mo and has cut 4 teeth. I try not to give it, but he's probably ended up with one or two doses per tooth, the day or so before they cut when he's been chewing his fist, me, his brother and sis, anything he can get his hands / teeth on, and when he's crying big tears.

I don't know if you can give the powders and anbusol together, but I see no reason why not- I personally would if dc3 could tolerate the powders. But don't take my word for it, just check with any pharmacist if you're out anywhere today.
