Are you turning into your mother? I am!

I'm 30, my mother is 60.

Today me and DH had the day off and went into town during which time I did three things that have stopped me dead in my tracks because of how much like me mother they were;

(1) A young man was cycling fast on the pavement. I shouted after him that he was a maniac. There are numerous elements of my mother in this- (a) I felt it was okay to yell at a stranger in public; (b) I used the word 'maniac'; (c) I judged him based on his appearance; (d) I described him on MN as a 'young man'.

(2) I saw a teenage boy dressed what I thought was absurdly. When he was out of earshot I said to my DH 'What did he come as? Is this what the kids wear nowadays?'. There are a number of elements of my mother in this- (a) I noticed what some random child was wearing; (b) I commented on it in public and someone could have known I was referring to him but I didn't care; (c) I referred to anyone under my age as 'the kids'; (d) I had to ask if that was the fashion, I didn't just know.

(3) When we got home, we made a cup of tea and I stood in the window looking at the street whilst I was drinking my tea. I gave DH a running commentary of what tradesmen every house had working there, what it looked like they were doing, speculating on the price, speculating on how much value it would/wouldn't add to their house and commented on how reliable the tradesmen looked. This is my mother through-and-through.

Are you turning into your mother. How? Does it freak you out? Or are you quite happy about it?

I'm quite happy that I might give as little of a shit about everything like my mum but not so happy about turning into a generally annoying, moany grump.

I laughed at talking at the telly Idiot!! Who does that?? Just caught myself doing it Blush

TheExMotherInLaw · 12/10/2015 21:19

Yup - I look in the mirror, but my mum looks back out at me!
Until 6 years ago I had quite distinctive waist length hair. It was how people recognised me. A couple of weeks after having it cut very short, I sadly had to go 'up north' to a family funeral. I nearly caused the demise of a couple of aged aunties who saw me arrive - they thought it was my mum's ghost!

I seem to channel the worst bits of both my parents! Sad

DH finds my obsession with turning lights off and closing doors 'to keep the heat in hilarious.' I actually tsked and said 'It's like bloody Blackpool in here!' just this evening :o

TravellingHopefully12 · 12/10/2015 22:54

I see my mother in the mirror if it's one of those three-way things. We look the same in profile

Dp also says I inherited the phrase 'you don't have to, but it would mean such a lot to me.'

OfficeGirl1969 · 12/10/2015 22:56

Trying very hard to channel my mum...I was seventeen when she died and she was bloody awesome. She was graceful and elegant and calm and funny. If I can be half what she was I'll be happy......

ProjectGainsborough · 12/10/2015 23:07

Dunno. I look in the mirror and see my dad. In a wig.

I think my mum might actually be a bit hipper than me. I had a 20 minute rant the other day about the skimpiness of Barbie's clothes and why can't Barbie come with a nice cardi to keep her warm? I looked up to see my mum looking at me like Hmm

GiddyOnZackHunt · 12/10/2015 23:11

I'm turning into my dad. I'm just waiting for the hairy chin to round it off.

thegiddylimit · 12/10/2015 23:18

No, my sister is. Mwah ha ha!

RaisingSteam · 12/10/2015 23:34

My sister and I are becoming so like my mum we have a word for it "cloning" . Even my mum and dad say it now!

I come out with her sayings and DH points and laughs just like my dad. I've got worrying about things down to a fine art.

Really my mum is a diamond, she fusses about the little things but if there was a crisis she'd be there like a rock. I hope I'm as useful.

Mynameismummy · 13/10/2015 10:37

I am definitely turning into my mother and it terrifies me. Not to mention my DH!!

AmyLouKin · 13/10/2015 11:19

I think we all pick up mannerisms and phrases from our parents! I don't mind picking up things from my mum. I think she's amazing.....my OH might not be so keen! Wink
I know we have a lot of family sayings, that come from my grandpa (on mums side) originally and I find them comforting! Smile

Thefuckinggrinch · 13/10/2015 19:41

I look almost exactly like my mum. I also picked up some of her phrases. Blackpool illuminations is used here as well. When I was a kid I lived near Blackpool and we went all the time. My kids have never been and have no idea what I'm talking about...

MissMarpleCat · 13/10/2015 19:47

Yes, I use the "were you born in a barn" also
"Are we Blackpool illuminations?" when dc's dont turn lights off
Also the classic "you'll catch your death" when they don't wear weather appropriate clothing
Also I'm forever looking for my reading glasses Grin

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 13/10/2015 20:13

I turned into my Mum about 10 years ago... the kids used to laugh and say 'you sounded JUST like Granny!'... tone of voice, phrases..the lot.

But now.... she has morphed into my Gran physically, and I have morphed into her... it's like a slow cloning process!

However it is amusing and pleasing to witness one of my daughters morphing into me..

TiredAssShowgirl · 13/10/2015 20:23

I'm turning into my dad. DH on the other hand, is turning into MY mum. Hmm

You know they say you marry your father? Nope, i married my mother. My husband married my father. Poor sod!

CigarsofthePharoahs · 14/10/2015 08:10

I caught myself saying "Right-o" the other day.
This is something my Gran always said and I would tease my Mum for saying it.

My DS (a teacher) told me the other day that he'd found himself asking a pupil whether he was born in a barn... He looked at me in horror and said, 'I realised that I'm turning into you Mum..!' He's 41.... (and yes, I hooted with laughter) Grin
