19 day old prem-prem baby with bad nappy rash - help!

Hi,

My little girl was born at 35+5 and went through difficulty with jaundice and not gaining enough weight, and now she has really bad nappy rash which seemed to develop over the course of a day! I swear its worse tonight than it was this morning!

I had left her for an hour with no nappy and started putting sudocrem on her tonight.

Any other hints or tips to ease her pain from the nappy rash. I hate to see her crying with the pain.

She is a breastfed baby.

Thanks

xx

Im here in the U.S. and we can call the paediatrician for things like this. You speak to the nurse and they tell you what to do or have you come in to see one of the doctors.

At 19 days old and being a premie I don't know if the same rules apply. I do know that sometimes it does warrant a doctors appointment.

Aw wee lamb. What are you using to clean her with? I'd wait and see if the sudocream helps first before trying anything else if I'm honest. Also well done on nappy free time! My dd wouldn't go any longer than 5mins at that age. Just wanted to be all covered up!!

Maybe swaddle her up and give lots of hugs Flowers for you. It's so hard with that wee sore cry isn't it? Sad

Stop using wipes - just cooled boiled water

A very thin layer of metanium on totally dry skin

Doc's tomorrow in case it's thrush

We found metanium was and is the best for both DD1 (now 5yrs) and DD2 (10wks), is was also something a friend was told to use by the staff in the baby unit for her little girl who was born at 33 wks.

They do 2 types, a yellow one which we use when it's bad and a white version which is an everyday cream.
DD2 had very sore open patches due to explosive poo's after I had antibiotics for mastitis and it cleared it up nicely within a few days.

It could be thrush. It would of started as spots and then into a big solid rash, possible with spots round the outer edge. Is she in cloth or disposables?

SolsburyHell · 07/10/2015 20:42

Try metanium but if that doesn't work, consider thrush. My prem dd was/is prone to persistent nappy rash and GP prescribed a cream called Timodene (I think) which was very good.

What gobbolino said, my DS was like this and I found that using only cotton wool and cooled boiled water worked wonders. I then dried his sore bottom with a cold hairdryer so it was totally dry and I didn't chafe it further with drying before applying the metanium (yellow one). Got the hairdryer tip from a doctor.

Egg whites beat spread on and leave air dry ds1 always had horrendous nappy rash and could never have sudocrem near him my gran told me about egg white and she had 12 kids

Lunastarfish · 07/10/2015 20:59

To my shame I didn't realise that I needed to dry my dds bottom before putting her nappy on. Within a week she had nappy rash.

We used sudocreme (as that was what I happened to have at home) and made sure she was completely dry going forward. For her last nappy at night we now use waitrose bottom butter as a barrier cream.

She still suffers occasionally (she's now 3 months) but not as bad as that first week.

Nonnainglese · 07/10/2015 21:09

There's another thread on here about nappy rash, might be worth looking at?

geekymommy · 08/10/2015 19:35

If you're using wipes, try some different ones. Get some unscented hypoallergenic ones. My DD had nappy rash that wouldn't go away, and the wipes turned out to be the problem.

Sunbeam18 · 08/10/2015 21:29

Have as much nappy free time as you can manage , wash bottom gently with warm water and a soft cloth (cotton wool can stick). Pat dry then metanium. Use lightly, don't put loads on. I'd go to the doc tomorrow as emergency appt just to check in case you need anything else. It's so sad for them x

ODog · 09/10/2015 12:04

I was going to say check it's not thrush as a pp has suggested. Very common with BF babies and also if they have had antibiotics. Not sure if she has but being prem I have made an assumption that she may have easily picked up a little if somewhere along the line.

If not, literally always nappy less when at home, wrap in a towel to feed to protect yourself.

Boredofthinkingofnewnames · 09/10/2015 12:07

We were given metanium in SCBU. Use the metanium while it clears up, lots of nappy free time when you can and then when it's better the Neals Yard Barrier Cream is fabulous (£20ish iirc) but you need such a tiny bit one tub got my twins all the way through to toddlerdom:)
