Yey! A new board for nappies, potty training, nappy rash, and anything else to do with little botties!

I just wanted to say that I've just moved from disposables to 'real nappies' and it's the best thing ever.

The first week was really difficult and even though I knew I wanted to move to real nappies I found them fiddly and found myself wanting to put a disposable back on my ds. I only ordered five nappies as a trial and it was a case of one day in them one day out. But strangely enough the second time I put him back in disposables his nappy rash came back (he's always had a red botty but this time a blister appeared). And I knew for the first time that it was the disposables causing this problem. As soon as I put him back in the cotton it went! Including any redness. And with a little practice (about 6-7 nappies later) I actually enjoy putting on the cuddly fleece/terry and cringe when I have to turn back to plastic..

So I've just put my full order in for loads of 'Bumbles' and Motherease Airflow wraps. I found I preferred the Bumbles to the Totsbots cos they are completely lined with fleece on the inside which means a very dry bottom for my ds and no hassle of knowing how to fold the terry flap and adding a liner etc. I just do it in advance and whip one out the bag during a change. My dh has also found these easier and is converted too (even though it took him a bit longer to start enjoying them as he doesn't change a nappy as often!)

Anyway, just wanted to share that with you and hope to see lots more threads in this area.

I'm also delighted to see this board, could talk about nappies for ages... in fact we have nappies but no baby as I'm currently running 6 days overdue with 1st pg. But the nappy drawer is bulging. I got a stack of Bumbles & Motherease wraps so glad to see karen99 your endorsement. Hoping to start with muslins from birth if poss. If I have moments of not believing there's ever actually going to be a real baby at the end of all this I go straight to the nappy drawer: it's a great comfort to me to see all those fluffy bundles tucked in there. Fully expect to spend my labour with one clutched to my cheek

MrsDoolittle · 13/05/2004 11:47

What's the different between bumbles and motherease one size?

Hi Spots! I was 5 days late, it feels like forever, but it happens! You'll have that little-un before you know it!

The Bumble can be used from birth too, you just have to pop the poppers together inside without the booster pad. My ds is 10mo so I'm a bit late with trying that out, but that's the way I'm going to do it with the next one (when that time comes!). I think it may also depend on the size of your baby. My ds was 8lb14oz so I think he would have gone in them straight away! But muslins are a good choice in the mean time as they grow so quickly you'll be using your fleecy Bumbles in no time.

Good luck with the birth.

MrsD. I didn't try the Motherease onesize, but tots and bumbles only. I found the tots sat too low on my ds whereas the bumbles seem to have a larger cut around the waist and back. I was going to try the MOS but the nappylady advised that they may be too lean a cut for my ds if I didn't get on with the tots. She left it for me to decide, and I thought too much choice can make the decision difficult, so stuck with the Bumbles as I enjoyed them so much. I don't find the bumbles more bluky around the legs and crotch either, just more generous round the waist. HTH.

cheers karen - more nappy fun to keep me occupied while I wait! x

muddaofsuburbia · 13/05/2004 16:41

Hurrah!!!

A fleece lined and leak proof board!

Bumbles sound lovely Karen. Still only talking about no2 but if the Tots don't manage to last a second sprog other (slimmer?) options are worth looking into. Are Bumbles a one size nappy or are there different sizes? Any pictures/links?

Well done on the new board btw

MrsDoolittle · 13/05/2004 16:55

Yes, this is a truly useful thread.
Dm bought me a small baby box of cotton bottoms and I have to say, I don't like them! Despite the fact I didn't read the small print i.e. baby should be 8lb. So based on advice gleaned on Mumsnet I contacted the Nappylady. She actually advised against the prefold cotton bottoms - which suits me!
Since then I have signed up to a trial of a motherease onesize and an airflow wrap - I think! I am awaiting delivery.
However, I am still in a position to be persuaded into something else. I haven't heard of these bumbles before!! Are they onesize?

ok, got totally carried away here - handed in my notice to the nappy service and ordered some tots bots and some bumbles. I blame MN!

MrsDoolittle · 14/05/2004 13:53

My motherease trial came through this morning.
She's going to look like a teletubby!!!!

susanmt · 14/05/2004 14:54

I'm another cloth nappy addict, so though I should pop in and say hi!

We're kissaluv users with a whole variety of wraps, I've got rikkis and airflows, Imse Vimse Bumpys (the mouse print is esp popular with ds at the moment) and have got a couple of Nature Babies tie dye ones on order for dd2! I use minkis at night and they are just fab, I'm a huge fan, have just ordered a few of the next size up for dd2 as I didn't use them for dd1 (was in kooshies back then, before I found out about all the fab nappies that there are out there!)

Nice to meet so many other real nappy people!

karen99 · 14/05/2004 15:08

Well done geekgrrl! I promise you'll love them!

Hi susanmt - how do you get to look at so many?! Is it just a case of ordering one from here and there or do you get them in second hand? I'd love to try more but just can't afford it... Or is this your vice? Packed away the wine in exchange for nappies? Seriously, how do people do it?

I'm terrible for nappies!

I used kooshies first time round as they were the only ones I had heard of - this was before we had internet access, it's almost 5 years since I got pg with dd1. I got on fine with them but they don't last too well and were rubbing the legs off dd2, having been used for dd1, ds, a friends baby and then on dd2, while she was tiny. The bigger type of kooshies fell apart after dd1, so I had to buy more for ds, and thats when I came accross the other kinds.

I tried a few out by borrowing from a friend and liked the kissaluvs the best. Wraps IME are much of a muchness as long as you change the nappy often enough, so I have tried different ones. I have 2 large rikkis, 2 large bumpys, 3 x-large airflows and now (today) 2 medium nature babies, which are gorgeous! Its not actually that many I suppose!!!!!

I use minkis at night because they are fleece and so are really good to the bottom! I settled on them really because they are made locally and are really high quality. But through the day I find they are quite bulky under a lot of baby clothes, although I always put them on dd2 if she has a gress on and no tights as they are so pretty you dont mind putting them on show!!!

I reckon that a few pounds here and there, its still not going to be as expensive as buying disposables for 3 children and I have actually converted 2 friends to cloth by letting them see what I had - so a good investment all round!

karen99 · 16/05/2004 09:27

Thanks susanmnt. It's great your 'batch' got used on so many bottoms! And I guess you're right, in the long run I will be saving and could possbily afford to splash out on the odd one or two new things. I'm starting to feel the addiction growing as I just can't wait for my new order to come through! I worked out the other day that I've already spent way more on disposables in the last 10 months than I have on my new cloth purchase, so considering he'll be in nappies for another two years that's such a great saving, plus as you say, they may be used on future babes! (I'm working on a friend too, she's due in July and I can't wait to show her the Bumbles)

i couldn't see bumbles on the best of..on mumsnet. am i looking in the wrong place?

karen99 · 19/05/2004 09:56

Hi Bundle. They're a new nappy, I think they came out last summer. Yes, I must ask Justine to put them on the nappy list! You can see them at easypeasynappies.co.uk or thenappylady.co.uk.

I guess those of us who have Bumbles should do a product review on them!

another non disp fan here - I couldn't imagine using anything else. we use cotton bottoms (I know, lazy old thing - it was the laundry service that did it) but if I have another I won't hestitate to wash them myself...it really wouldn't be that much of a prob. I love ds's little fat chunky bot, the fact that he doesn't smell like he does in disposibles and and the way they feel lovely and natural.

MrsDoolittle · 29/05/2004 14:00

Hi Squirmyworm - dm bought me a box of cotton bottoms for dd before she was born. I don't get on with them myself. Every time we have tried them she has leaked and I don't think she is a heavy wetter.
Is there a trick to them because otherwise I think I will sell them.

squirmyworm · 31/05/2004 19:29

Hi Mrs D...are they the ones that are shaped or the ones you fold yourself? we tried both and I have to say the fold-your-own are better if you have a baby with a hosepipe tendency (we do!). Next thing to look at is the wrap - CB's come in two types, the polyester ones which are semi waterproof and the soft cotton ones with a holey breathable inner. We like the cotton ones and rarely get leaks BUT if you are finding you do then the polyester ones are best. FInally we did have to fiddle a bit with the fit. If you makes sure that once you have put the nappy on you do a quick tighten ensuring it fits as close to the leg as possible and sort of pulling the sides around to meet the middle bit it works fine. Good luck!

MrsDoolittle · 01/06/2004 10:17

Thanks squirmyworm. I do have the polyester wraps and I am using them over a MEOS at the moment, they are the all I have that is small enough. They are prefolds but I think I have fallen for the terry nappies now anyway.
