Hi I'm just after a bit of advice my little boy is 8 months and I have decided to get rid of the dummy I have just gone cold turkey with it ! I am on day 2 and have noticed for naps and bedtimes he now seems to be relying on the bottle more? I also think by now he should be switching to a beaker.

Would you focus on the dummy first or is it just as bad to replace one with the other?

8 months is still very little. I personally have no problem with dummies or bottles into toddlerhood if it helps them sleep/gives them comfort, but appreciate not everyone feels that way. Since you have ditched the dummy I would let him have his bottle for a little while longer rather than taking all his sleep comforts away in one go. Does he have another comfort item like a toy or muslin etc.

I wouldn't worry about switching to a cup until a year for bedtime. My DS is 16mo and has only ever had water/juice from a beaker but I have kept his bottle for his milk at bedtime for now.

I'm with ODog - he's far too young for it to be taken away - it was his comfort.

you need to be careful he doesn't find his thumb!!! Personally (and I don't like dummies) I would let him have it for sleeping purposes only - so only appears when you want him to sleep and be strict about it

I got rid of my 14 month old's dummy 2 weeks ago and she is using her bottle for comfort a little more but I'm happy for her to keep that for now as I don't want to take away all of her comfort items. Not was the dummy that was affecting her sleep anyway, not the bottle and since the dummy has gone she has stopped waking through the night. She can keep her bottle for a while yet, I'm in no rush.

I think dummy is better than a bottle for comfort, as bottles before sleep are the major cause of tooth decay. I don't see problem with dummies if they are for sleep only - unless you need to get up too many times at night to replace them.

Thank you I had just read that it is best to get rid of the dummy before 1 as then it is easier! I will continue with the bottles as usual

We got rid of the dummy at 3 and it was a doddle! He only had it at nights and while the dentist asked if he had a dummy (she thought he had a gap in his yaws) I didn't notice anything.
When they are rational (??) it is so much simpler!

Ds is 21 months and still has his dummy and a bottle (just one before bed and teeth brushing). He sleeps for 2.5 hours in the afternoon and 11.5 hours at night, I have an 11 week old too. I think it help that sleep we're kicking getting rid of them well into the long grass!
