Room temperature for baby

I'm due my first baby soon and have set up the cot in our room in preparation, however the thermometer I have says it's 25c in here! it doesn't entirely surprise me as this is a new build flat and we've never had to have the heating on as it's so warm, but what can I do to cool the room down? A fan?

This October warmness is lovely but it's kind of stressing me out!

You don't need to cool the room down. I know the guidelines give the magic number of 18 degrees, but it's often just not achievable: Our DD's room has been consistently in the mid 20's as a minimum for the last 5 months and last winter dipped to around 12ish.
A fan is great when it gets uncomfortably hot, but you can't aim it at them as the draught is too much. Just dress them for the temperature Smile Are you planning on using a baby sleeping bag? The baby probably won't fit one for the first couple of weeks, but this guide is really helpful as a guideline for what to dress them in depending on the temperature. Also although it's mid 20's when you go to bed, it probably drops quite a bit by 4am, so that's worth bearing in mind too. I just chuck an extra blanket over if the air temperature feels like it's dropped. Yeah she still has us up regularly in the night at 16mo. Ugh.
Personally I always dressed her slightly under as a newborn as if they are a bit cold they'll wake and most certainly let you know! Being over-dressed before they can regulate their own temperature can be dangerous.
There was a very funny thread on her (possibly AIBU?) recently about the angry Groegg, with the consensus being put it down and step away! Might be worth a search out Smile

Thank you! I feel a bit more relaxed now, yes I have some gro bags to use when she is big enough..I just worry that some babies like being swaddled but it seems too warm to be able to do that?

I will check the temp when I go for one of my (numerous) wees during the night and see if it drops too.

And I will hunt the thread about the gro egg out! Funnily enough I ordered one yesterday Grin

My DD was breech and her legs were really sticky-out for quite some time so I wasn't able to swaddle her, although I would have liked to (numerous midwives and our doula tried. Impossible!) but I believe you can do it with a muslin if it's warm Smile

My room does the exact same I always have a small fan in there everynight (not pointing at him) and if it goes to hot I always open my window abit and put two blankets over him (2-2.5tog) incase it's cold outside and he sleeps like a log or just put one blanket over him with the fan on x

I have a GroEgg thermometer in DD's room....and it's the biggest waste of money ever. It's said that its between 24 and 27 degrees in her room ever since we had the massive heatwave in the summer....there is no way it's that hot in there. It feels cool sometimes, so I just go with the "feel" of the room. She usually goes to bed in a short-sleeves vest, long sleeved sleepsuit, and a 2 tog grobag - unless it feels cold in there, then I just swap the short sleeved vest for a long sleeved one. And touching your LO's chest or back is always the best indicator to their temperature Smile
Congratulations on your pregnancy! Flowers

Ah I hadn't thought of swaddling with a muslin!
Thanks everyone, I've had the window open all day and it's only dropped to 24, so I'm not sure there is much more we can do, this flat is just a hotbox, I'm so glad she's going to be born in Autumn and not summer!

I will look at getting a fan to create a breeze though.

I've just read that thread skankingpiglet and have chuckled a lot! It's put things in perspective!

I was just thinking about this today. I have a room thermometer on my bedside table which is adjacent to where my sons Moses basket is and it was reading 21• with the window open (I looked up the lullaby trusts guidelines and it says between 16-20• ...

I genuinely cant remember what I did with my DD 6years ago so I'm glad I found this thread lol x
