Sorry if a stupid question but what kind of winter clothes will a 3-6 month old need?

I was going to buy a snow suit but then if baby is in a pushchair with one of the warm cocoons would this be too much? What would you put them in for this?

Hi miss I'm keen to know this too! The snow/Pram suits look very warm.
DS is often strapped to me in the baby carrier which makes us both warm and both the Pram and carseat make him very warm too. But we do spend quite a bit of time outside.

Im more concerned about inside my ice box house.

Iguessyourestuckwithme · 03/10/2015 13:15

Inside we will wear vests with an outfit/babygrow on top, socks and possibly a cardigan if cold but will have heating. When out in milder winter wear he will wear the same but with a hat and a warmer cardigan or coat then a blanket if in the pram. As it get progressively colder he will wear a vest and outfit then be wrapped up in an all in 1 snowsuit. We don't have a cocoon or cosy toes.

KatyN · 03/10/2015 17:18

We had a snow suit and not a pram thingy. Then he could wear it when in the baby carrier or the pram.
On a really cold day you can put a blanked over his legs in the pram!!

If you do buy a snowsuit, look for one with two zips down the front so you can open it up like a flap. Its loads easier to get baby out and you can open it up when you're popping in and out of shops so baby doesn't get too warm. I'm having a similar problem trying to plan clothes for my 11 month old, initially I was thinking another snow suit but she's just started toddling about so I need something she can wear with shoes, so we've got a winter coat and a cosy toes for the pram to cover her legs.

ragged · 03/10/2015 18:02

Snowsuit & cosytoes.

Iguessyourestuckwithme · 03/10/2015 18:05

Annatha - we had an all in 1 for dc1 who was walking at 10months last year to wear during the winter - she would wear it in the pram instead of having a cosy toes and would get out and walk - it had detachable feet so she could wear with wellies/shoes.

If they're in a carrier held right against your warmth they need much less than you might expect.
I added a cardigan / jumper with a high neck, woolly hat and long thick socks. I used to put them under my big fleece coat, kept us both warm.

annatha · 03/10/2015 19:57

Iguess that suit is beautiful thanks!

nephrofox · 03/10/2015 20:45

For the buggy with footmuff I would just put a coat on rather than a full snowsuit.

For the baby carrier you'd be best with some fleecy over trousers or long socks, plus hat. Basically cover the extremities as the body will be kept warm by you, especially if under your coat.

MissTwister · 03/10/2015 20:50

So a cosytoes is pretty much the same as the bugaboo cocoon isn't it? So this and a snowsuit Ragged - at what temp?

If your in the UK you dont need both a pram sleeping bag type thing and a snowsuit - i go with the pram thing and then on the coldest days, vest, babygrow/outfit, jumper or jacket and hat and mittens.

I'm living abroad and have down to -30C and we only occasionly use both bag and snowsuit at the same time.
Snowsuits are a pain in the arse esp f hte bay isn't mobile yet, I'd aviod them as much as you can.

DeathMetalMum · 03/10/2015 20:56

I wouldn't bother with a snowsuit either. I'd just add in an extra blanket under the cosy toes if it's very cold with the added benefit of being able to remove it if it gets warmer/you go inside. Extra socks are great or little moccasin socks, boots do some nice ones which my dd's lived in during the winter.

We often did tights, trousers and socks, for less draughts and even long sleve vests and long t-shirt. I found lots of layers easier than a bulky coat, as everwhere we went was a different temperature.

Artandco · 03/10/2015 21:00

I wouldn't put a snowsuit on in the UK under a cosy toes. Just a hat, warm cardigan and extra blanket on first before cosytoes if cold. It's far easier adding extra blankets as can take them off without waking baby once you go inside somewhere out or when you return home

If you need something warm for in a sling get a baby 'bug in a rug'. It's like a blanket with feet!

ragged · 03/10/2015 22:03

Gosh I dunno temps. Not like now obviously. More like when the usual 0-10 C max degrees of in winter.
I suspect it's odd to other people because we walked relatively long distances. I forget that the avg adult in UK never walks further outside than than 1/4 mile away.

poocatcherchampion · 03/10/2015 22:05

Don't use anything padded with a carseat. It compromises the safety of the straps. Thinnish jumper then layers over the top.

Artandco · 03/10/2015 22:48

Ragged - we walk miles. But a blanket and cosytoes is just as good as a snowsuit yet easier to take on and off. It is rare it gets below 0 degrees in the UK. Mine had a sheepskin liner cosytoes and just added a merino wool blanket tight over shoulders in deepest winter. At 3 months old baby will be lying down virtually not moving anyway

Sparrowlegs248 · 04/10/2015 07:33

Some really useful answer here thank you. I've just looked at through bug in a rug and think i will get one, its ideal for my everyday trip to the stables - we drive then put DS in the carrier so it will be perfect.

Also pleased to see most people here don't bother with a snow suit. DS gets really warm.in both Pam and cat seat, even in colder temperatures i think he'd be too warm with a snow suit.

Thinking of using tights for him too as an extra layer

DeathMetalMum · 04/10/2015 07:43

We walked miles too (I don't drive), but also used public transport a fair bit, another place it's easier to have a blanket or two that can just be removed.

eurochick · 04/10/2015 07:47

We didn't have a cosy toes last winter when our daughter was this age. We had a good snowsuit instead. It could be zipped like a sleeping bag or with legs so the pushchair could do up. We didn't use it in the car seat though- just a cardigan and blankets.

winchester1 · 04/10/2015 08:38

Our kids sleep outside a couple of hours a day and non moving babies only needed both bag and suit at minus 10 ish provided they were put of the wind.

ohthegoats · 04/10/2015 09:31

I had a little down suit last year for her, but only used twice on a skiing holiday. The rest of the time I carried her and she wore her normal clothes + a hat and good socks. I could do my maternity coat up around most of her.

This year she'll be on the back of a bike quite a lot, so we bought the down suit in the next size up. It hasn't got feet in, so she'll just wear her normal shoes. Someone also gave us a year old fluffy suit from Gap, but it's got feet in and is white, so I can't imagine she'll ever use it. I might cut the feet out.

knittingbee · 04/10/2015 19:16

We do coat in the buggy with the cosy toes, snowsuit in the carrier.

superbfairywren · 05/10/2015 08:52

Highly recommend a star snug blanket from Tuppence and crumble, theyre easy to get on and off, warm and comfy but not bulky like a snowsuit. They can be used in carriers(probably wouldnt bother though as cuddly and warm without), prams and carseats as they work with a 5 point harness .

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 05/10/2015 16:32

Pram suits are pretty pointless not advised in car seats and in pram or pushchair too hot with a cocoon or footmuff.

I have never used jumpers either I go for long sleeve vests top n trousers or dungarees and when tiny a cardi if needed
