8mo DS same height / weight since june?

helloelo · 02/10/2015 08:57

DS, now 8mo has been just under 18lbs and 68-69cm since June (4 months). EBF until 5,5mo then BLW (4 meals + 6 feeds incl. 4 between 8pm and 8am). He's happy, alert, crawling, babling, smiling.
Not worrying, right?
(trying to be chilled about it...)

Weight gain does tend to slow down as they are on the move more. If he's happy and content I wouldn't worry to much about it but try and offer some more calorific foods or bigger portions so full fat cheese yoghurt and spreads etc

StrawberriCream · 02/10/2015 09:31

To be fair 18lb at 4 months is pretty big!! My 10 month old doesn't weigh that yet!! Saying that it's very unusual for no weight gain for four months. Have you seen to the gp or health visitor in case there are underlying problems?

helloelo · 02/10/2015 13:45

I had a gp appt yesterday for a cold my ds has not been able to shake off for a couple of weeks and he was not concerned about his overall health. I guess it's just that he was measured and weighted and I was plotting his new numbers on his chart and realised the numbers have not changed in 4 months. He was on the 85th percentile and now on the 20th...

That is a big drop in centile. Was the health visitor not concerned by this drop? What kind of foods is he eating and how much?

helloelo · 02/10/2015 14:10

Thanks for the initial input, much appreciated.

Weight was not mentioned in context, GP just weighted DS as a formality and gave me the number in passing. I'm now just plotting it on his chart and realising it's, indeed, a big drop (on WHO chart).

Here is what he eats:

  • 2am feed
  • 6am feed
  • 8am feed
  • 8.30am breakfast (fruit, soft cheese, bread with a bit of butter)
  • (sometimes) 11am feed
  • 12pm lunch (typical meal is a 1 egg cheese omelette with tomatoes on bread or a fist full of pasta with courgettes + fruit + yogurt)
  • 1.30pm feed (replaced by 3,5oz of EBM when he's at the creche)
  • 4pm fruit pouch + biscuit
  • 5.30pm feed
  • 7pm diner (same structure as lunch)
  • 8pm feed

He eats anything put in front of him, I don't restrict his diet apart from salt and sugar, I'm liberal with oils and seasoning.

I read it's quite common for BF babies to slow down between 6 and 9mo. But that much?

If you are concerned, which clearly you are, you should talk to a HV. Take him to a weigh in clinic and have a chat. Most likely he's absolutely fine but if you're anxious about it you need to put your mind at rest. My 8 month old DS has the following to eat and it sounds similar:

7.30 - 8oz bottle (doesn't necessarily finish it)
8.30 - breakfast. Weetabix or porridge made with whole milk
11.30-12 - lunch. An Ella's pouch or meal I have made such as casserole, curry, pasta etc and some finger food. Then a yoghurt or fruit pot.
1.30-2 - another bottle
4.30-5 - dinner. Same as lunch
6.30ish - last bottle.

JonSnowKnowsNowt · 02/10/2015 14:18

Could be that either of the readings (the one in June) or the one now was wrong. I have had incorrect weigh/measures of my DC in hospital before now - one of mine apparently got 3cm shorter in a 6 month period!

BertieBotts · 02/10/2015 14:19

A cold can slow their weight gain too, so it might be a combination of the cold and the sudden starting to move around.

helloelo · 02/10/2015 14:36

Thanks a lot. I'll wait until his cold get better, switch a few tomatoes for avocados and see what happens. I read on LLL forums it can happen and you're right Bertie and Jon, it could be that one of the reading was wrong anyway. Context is that where I live, BF + BLW is seen as something very unusual so I don't want to add to my case iyswim

3.5oz isn't really that much I know it's impossible to tell exactly how much he's taking BF but I'd be offering around 7oz . My ds is 7 months he is FF
7.30 7oz bottle
8.30 weetabix or porridge
12 small lunch with yogurt 4oz milk (I've only just introduced lunch time hence it being half food half milk)
3pm 7oz bottle
5pm tea - potatoes veg cheese with fruit
7pm 7oz bottle before bed

ffffffedup · 02/10/2015 15:24

Is he still wearing same size clothes as he was 4 months ago? Looking back at photos does he look bigger now?

Caterina99 · 02/10/2015 15:58

We had a lot of stress when DS was a newborn as he wasn't putting on enough weight and apparently lost weight between weighings. I'm convinced they weighed him wrong/ wrote down wrong number the first time. Even the doctor agreed the figures were strange, so it does happen!

helloelo · 02/10/2015 16:38

ffffffedup thanks for your input, I read it and though "god, mine eats a lot more than that, what's wrong with him?!" I see worrying stuff everywhere, I need to chill :).
He's been wearing the same clothes, I noticed because I had fall jumpers in the next size up and I had to buy a couple of things in his current size. He looks slimmer than in June, he def has not put on weight, I can tell. But (sadly in this case!) you can't compare FF and EBM amount, esp. as he take his EBM in a cup at the creche, I read everywhere that they drink way more when it's in a bottle, even with the slow flow teats.

He doesn't look famish at all though. But we're tall and big so the difference is stature is noticeable. Argh, I need a glass of wine.

Crikey I need to increase DDs food intake I'm practically starving her by the sound of it Blush

helloelo · 02/10/2015 20:50

I don't know blue, probably not tbh. Mine spends his entire days crawling around, climbing on everything...

BlueThursday · 02/10/2015 22:56

Ah see DD is pretty lazy; a wee session on the jumperoo and some rolling is all she can muster of a day Grin

ffffffedup · 02/10/2015 23:07

helloelo do you think that's a lot I'm giving my 7 mo? Christ I was panicking he wasn't getting enough, I guess you can never tell if your doing right for wrong. My ds is on the 25th centile so always thought he needs bulking up even though he's by no means skinny.
If your ds is happy healthy and content then really I wouldn't worry to much about it.

helloelo · 02/10/2015 23:20

No no fffffedup I think it sounds perfectly normal. My comment was about the fact that when BF babies drink EBM from a cup, they don't take as much as you would put in a formula bottle. I was warned not to worry if I couldn't express the customary 5oz. But you're right, God, we worry too much :)
