Is it normal for a 9 year old boy to be blatantly selfish?

OK, so my boy's behaviour is blatantly selfish. He wanted schoolmates to come to his birthday party purely for the presents he would get. During the summer this year I took my boys out and about, I'm a single mum and money is tight but I saved up and took them on holidays and let him buy souvenirs and bought him ice-cream most days, but rather than appreciating what he had he just wanted more, more, more, it was can I have this, can I have that. He has an older brother who is the complete opposite, very laid back and undemanding and not at all materialistic (rarely asks for anything and if given money he just saves it). I love them both dearly, as does his dad, and have always tried to treat them equally. I don't spoil them (can't afford to!) and neither does his dad (we are divorced and share custody). Neither myself nor his dad are like this and can't understand why he is this way. I'm just curious as to whether this is normal for his age or whether it is a personality thing?

Yes.

But some are more so than others. I have a v unselfish nephew and a charming but egocentric and idle son. Both showed much if their natures by 2.

I just need to train DS in enlightened self interest, which covers up nature..

How would you do that, NegativeIron?
