Any tips on how to wipe DD's nose without her apparently thinking I'm murdering her?

As the title says really! DD 9 months has her second cold in as many weeks and every time I try to wipe her nose it is a traumatic event! finally I realise why there are so many kids running round with snotty noses I know that I can easily just get the job done and put up with the tears but just wondering if anyone had any tips for a calmer way!

Please excuse my liberal overuse of exclamation marks in the above Blush

I found wet wipes slightly easier to use than tissues, but nothing stopped the blood curdling screams. Thank God all the neighbours have young children or I'd definitely have had a visit from someone official Hmm

So my dd isnt the only one like this! Sometimes I can sort of sneak up and quickly wipe, other times make it in to a game. Most of the time there's a lot of screaming. Actually most of the time she runs around covered in snot.

Isabelle, DS is three and ran away when I wanted to clean his snot encrusted face before nursery. I explained what I wanted to do and was told " but I like my face all snotty".

polkadotdelight · 17/09/2015 18:03

Wet wipes are softer but otherwise its a case of stealth attack from behind!

slicedfinger · 17/09/2015 18:08

You just gave me the most god awful flash backs to when DD1 was little. I actually shuddered. Blush Good advice above!

Penguin13 · 17/09/2015 19:30

Thanks all. As I suspected. Good tip on the wet wipes though. I did go through a whole rigmarole of touching my face with the tissue then hers, silly faces etc which worked once but sadly she saw me coming the next time Grin On the plus side I got to see the biggest snot bubble ever today. So there's that there really should be a vom emoticon

Ah dd was totally like that at 9 months. You'll be pleased to know at 18 months I can send her to get her own tissue and she'll let me wipe her nose then want to do it herself repeatedly along with pulling aaaaall the tissues out the box so it doesn't last for ever.

Memyselfandthatotherperson · 17/09/2015 19:44

Vaseline under the noes really helps reduce the soreness and stops the crusty snot sticking.

KatyN · 17/09/2015 21:11

I don't like wet wipes... No idea why just a bit precious about them being all drying and scented.. So I use a damp flannel. I also go very quickly. Wiping noses can be odd because you can't breathe.

Maybe I'll get over the wet wipe thing with child 2. I do feel I'm missing I somewhat.

Our old Gp gave me a tip for clearing out baby noses, I'm sure it didn't adhere to health and safety rules, but it certainly cleared a blocked nose!

Her tip was to get a bit of kitchen roll paper and twist a corner into a thin pointy end, then thread it up the nose and wiggle. The baby always, always does a huge sneeze and gets rid of the snot. I never lost a bit of kitchen roll either as it tends to not have to go too far in before the sneeze happens.

We've been dealing with this, and the same response when cleaning face and hands after every meal. We've had some success with doing this little piggy or round and round the garden and then the "whee whee whee" / "tickle you under there" last bit we kind of bundle a big tickle and a wipe into one... Sometimes she's too busy shrieking with laughter to notice, sometimes not.

mumofboyo · 18/09/2015 11:10

I just sort of put one hand on their head to hold it still and quickly wiped with the other hand using a baby wipe. They cried but it was over and done with within seconds. They're fine with it now and wipe their own noses.

liquidrevolution · 20/09/2015 21:55

Try giving DC a wipe as well so they can do it to you. Only way I can wipe my DDs face after a baby led weaning session...

Lilipot15 · 22/09/2015 10:34

Give child a wipe too, let them wipe your nose as well.
I usually give her some warning as I imagined how it would be if someone approached me unexpectedly to wipe my nose.
Really though I don't think it's anything I did, nursery did something magical and she has her nose wiped okay (for now!)

knittingbee · 22/09/2015 19:46

You can get special wet wipes for noses in Boots. I was hmm about this sort of thing but DD definitely objects to them a lot less than a standard baby wipe. They're saline and eucalyptus, one brand is called Nose Nuzzles but there's another one I can't remember the name of.
