DS grown out of nappies but not potty trained

Ds is 21 months and has grown out of his night nappies (daytime still fine). He's been wearing Pampers Baby Dry 6+ but now wakes up each morning soaking wet.

He's nowhere near ready for potty training so am wondering what to try next for night nappies.

Are Huggies night-time pull ups bigger? And would they work for a child who isn't potty trained - ie ds won't just be having the occasional wee as an accident, he'll be weeing throughout the night, so am worried whether they're as absorbent as nappies? This is also why I haven't yet used the Pampers pull-ups, but perhaps they'd be ok for night time?

Ds is biggish for his age - as a baby he was roughly 90th percentile - but he isn't beyond enormous so am assuming there must be another night nappy appropriate for him?

Thanks so much for any help.

DS is 25 months and I have never Found a nappy that doesn't leak at night (and over time I have tried every brand!) He definitely moves around a lot at night, so not sure if that's why.

We use a bamboo reusable nappy liner in one size up from whatever he's in during the day, and we now rarely have leaks. He's quite a regular poo-er, so as long as I change the nappy straight before bed and soon after waking it rarely has anything but wee on it, so is easier to cope with proper reusables (10 min rinse in washer, then thrown in with the towels on a 90).

My next suggestion was the waist band folding down thing. I found this happening with DS. He wasn't leaking but the wet innards above the sticky strips were folding down and rubbing against his pjs. This stopped with a smaller size and I found that not all brands have the absorbent bit all the way to the top.

addictedtosugar · 12/09/2015 20:45

Can you change his nappy on your way to bed (without waking him)? I agree they aren't too small. But yes, pull ups seemed less absorbant to us. Potty training in the day won't necessarily bring nighttime dryness.

We put DS1 back into a poppered vest for a bit, as he discovered he could fiddle. That stopped most of the leaks.

Is he is a size 6 in the day as well?

Are you using nappy nappies as opposed to pull ups? DD is 16mths and because she sleeps on her front she was saturated around the waist every morning. I put her in pull ups because the absorbent bit goes further up and not a single incident since! They are very very heavy at the front in the morning so I can see that's where the problem lies. I was also going to try putting the nighttime nappy on backwards as I read somewhere that can help.

HoggleHoggle · 13/09/2015 06:55

Thanks again.

He's in size 5 in day times but I'm about to change that to 5+ as they're getting a little tight round his legs.

I've cut back his bedtime milk slightly but the nappies are still enormous (makes sense given I've not drastically cut back). I've tried putting him on the potty at bath time but no dice yet - although he loves it which is good news in any case!

I might go back down a nappy size and try the back to front trick. Looking at it with all your input I can see now it's less a nappy size issue and more a 'lot of wee' in a nappy issue - it's all concentrated right at the front which is causing the waistband leak.

He wears popper vests still and a sleeping bag so I don't think he's doing any fiddling.

Try putting a pad in the nappy and then just removing it when you go to bed.

Also, the band of the nappy shouldn't be going up onto the tummy iyswim? Do the tabs up quite snugly underneath his tummy, around the narrower part. There should then be an enormous expanse of nappy between the legs able to soak up wee.

slithytove · 13/09/2015 07:23

Meant to say DS went through a very leaky phase where he was just shooting up nappy sizes. I found switching brands worked, asdas little angels or Aldi mamia were the best. Also size for size bigger than pampers.

Tab nappies better than pull ups for night.

And DS has also gone down nappy sizes from 6+ to 4+ as he has slimmed down and become more of a little boy, and we are only just starting potty training at 2 and a half.

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 13/09/2015 07:29

If he fits in a size 5, a size 6+ is almost certainly a bit too big. DD wears 6+ for bed - she's 3.4 & high on the growth charts, is in 4-5 clothes, we're just about to put her into 5-6 clothes.

I'd be pretty certain the leaks are due to a combination of fit, how it "sits" on your DS/how you do it up IYSWIM, and whether he's wriggling & making it loose in the night.

FWIW, we've found that the largest size of Sainsburys nappies are a fraction bigger than Pampers 6+.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 13/09/2015 07:45

My 91st centile 22 month old is in size 5's day and night. I've never put her in a different size at night- if it fits in the day why would it be too small at night?
We went through a very leaky phase, it was a combination of get having too much milk before bed and we also realised she was drinking bath water! We swapped her bottle for a cup and she naturally took less milk as she'd been drinking for comfort rather than thirst. She hadn't leaked now for about a month.

Tangoandcreditcards · 13/09/2015 08:12

Jumping on to agree with you a bit OP. My 19mo DS is in 6+ at night (5+ in the day). He's well below the weight limits of the nappies he's wearing (about 22lbs - always been 50th centile). Like you, I go up at night when he starts leaking and the leaks stop, I don't know what I'm going to do when he grows out of them. He hasn't had night-time milk for a long time (but does drink a fair amount of his bath Blush ).

I know a lot of the other posters are getting older/bigger kids in the same size nappies but I wonder if it's something to do with shape/he's especially wee-y, we do still change him occasionally at night if he wakes up and it's totally busting - I'm thinking of trying another brand, to see if they hold night time wees better and it's just that pampers don't suit his physique.

I did buy DS a potty. He puts it on his head. He doesn't seem to know when he's going yet and his nappies are v v heavy in the morning and probably at least once during the day.

Tangoandcreditcards · 13/09/2015 08:14

Snap on the bath grotbag

cheers

ThatsNotMyHouseItIsTooClean · 13/09/2015 08:22

Potty training your DS may not help much as, IME, there can often be a 12mth+ gap between daytime & nighttime dryness. The way it might help is if he can be encouraged to do a wee before bed as then there will be less to do in the night.
Is the dampness on his PJs definitely wee & not sweat? My two would sometimes get quite sweaty around their tummy areas.

Bishboshbash · 13/09/2015 08:28

Does he wear a vest with poppers? I found night time nappies always leaked it meant it was time to go up a size in vests not nappies as when the nappy filled up the vest pulled it at a funny angle and it leaked.
Either that or change him before you go to bed when he is asleep. My DS kept waking up soaking (he loves bedtime milk!) so I change him not long after he goes to sleep, it seems to make the nappy last until morning.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 13/09/2015 11:35

Tango we've had to remove any toys from the bath which could be used as a drinking vessel!

HoggleHoggle · 13/09/2015 21:32

Thanks again all - so helpful.

grotbag and tango ds does drink a lot of bath water too! We've hidden the cups for the last few nights.

slithy interesting that your ds has gone down sizes. I've gone back to 6 tonight after realising I shouldn't have done the last size up probably, so will see if that helps at all.

thats notmyhouse it's definitely wee not sweat. It pongs Confused

Last two mornings have been much dryer - more damp than wet. Not sure if the combination of slight decrease of bedtime milk and lack of bath water nightcap is helping or if I've been doing the nappies up better, or something else.

From the limited time I've been trying ds on the potty around bath time I don't get the impression that he has the foggiest about controlling his wee yet but I'll keep it in the routine so he's getting used to it etc. I was planning to wait until next summer for potty training (unless he seems ready before) so I'm not feeling any pressure on this. I think fluids is probably key, and maybe looking again at nappy fit or brand. I can't change him when I come to bed unfortunately because he'd wake up and stay up.

I change my ds roughly half an hour after he goes to sleep as he is in a really deep sleep by then and doesn't wake up, seems to make the nappy last just long enough not to leak!

dreamingofsleeping · 14/09/2015 00:29

You could try adding an adult incontinence pad inside the nappy (cutting holes in the waterproof layer so it can soak through to the nappy). This worked really well for us. Also undoing the vest poppers or using a larger size of vest so the nappy has space to expand.

LovelyWeatherForDucks · 23/09/2015 14:51

Just to add, my DS used to leak if he was wearing snug pjs / popped vests - I guess once the nappy got full the pressure from tight clothing caused the wee to leak out. Just a thought! Likewise if the band of the nappy was too tight.

flanjabelle · 23/09/2015 15:12

I was going to ask if the vests are too tighT but lovely beat me to it. If dd has a vest that is getting a bit small or tights on then nappies always leak. They just haven't got the room to expand.

duckyneedsaclean · 23/09/2015 15:16

If he sleeps on his front of the nappy on backwards - they're more absorbant on the back.

Might be worth a shot

duckyneedsaclean · 23/09/2015 15:17

*Put the nappy on, not of

captainproton · 23/09/2015 15:22

My DS is like this, he is 25 months and is in a size 5+ in the day and size 6 at night. He loves drinking and where as my DD will sip her water or milk, he'll just down it in one. He's in bigger nappy for more absorbency, I stopped the night time milk which helped a lot.
