What are your babies wearing?

I feel like I'm not wrapping DS up as much as some people and my mother has commented about being cold in my house, when it really wasn't. I do check that he's warm enough .

He is currently wearing a vest and sleepsuits. He spends a lot of time being held, on me or in the carrier and always feels warm, apart from his hands.

I think that's fine. I don't wrap DS up too much as I was scared of overheating him. when I had him in March I put him in vest and baby grow. He seemed ok

PosterEh · 06/09/2015 11:02

I think there is a lot of variation in this and that the babies usually let you know if they are too cold. I have friends who would dress their children in vest, tshirt, long sleeved top and jumper when mine were in just vest and longsleeved top. Dd is now 3 and very rarely tells me she is cold and refuses her coat most days so I guess she doesn't feel the cold that much.

I think a vest and sleep suit is ok at the moment indoors, but would looks to add a cardigan soon as getting colder. I also added booties to mine to keep feet warm as it gets colder

BeautifulBatman · 06/09/2015 11:07

Depends. How warm is your house?

CarrotPuff · 06/09/2015 16:20

Our house is really cold at the moment - we had to put heating on this morning! So if I had a baby now s/he would be wearing a cardi and socks on top.

I used to keep DS in vest and babygro too, he was born in November, even when he was on his playmat. In hindsight, I think he was too cold Blush

ODog · 06/09/2015 16:47

I have the hottest DS known to man. One HV said to me to ignore the one layer more than yourself rule and just go with what you feel is right. DS normally has one layer less than me and has done since a baby. He was born in June last year and spent most of his time in just a nappy still weeping about all the cute outfits that never got worn

randomsabreuse · 06/09/2015 17:19

4 week old short sleeve top and leggings. Socks are a losing battle and she's quite leggy - 0-3 leggings about right length but need to be under tops to stay up.

Generally toasty behind neck/on chest which is what MW said to use. Outside always has hat, thicker babygrow and possibly cardigan if not in sling.

Night time - babygrow and grow bag but some nights just babygrow. House about 18 degrees - our area suggests 16-20 as best temperature range for newborns

BertieBotts · 06/09/2015 17:44

With newborns it's best to check their body temperature by putting two fingers in the back of their collar and feeling their back. If it feels hot/warm that's okay, sweaty is too hot, if it feels cool then they are too cold.

MissTwister · 06/09/2015 20:12

Midwife said same amount of layers as I would wear. Baby has just been in a sleepsuit today with no vest - she hasnt seemed cold! At night it's currently a sleepsuit and grobag

Maybe I need to put a vest on her too!

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 06/09/2015 20:15

Mine is just in a sleep suit, she's a warm baby (8 weeks old). I'll probably start adding a vest soon. I put a cardi on when we go out. She has cried when too hot before but never seemed to be too cold.

Fluffy24 · 06/09/2015 20:19

Today (and most of summer) was vest and sleepsuit (about 18°cc indoors) but at times getting a bit cooler so been out buying cardigans today.

I go by what I'm wearing and was totally paranoid about him overheating so if it's cool and I reach for a jumper I put something else on him too.

slightlyconfused85 · 06/09/2015 20:20

My 7 week old is in vest and sleep suits. I put a hat on him if we go out and he goes in a grobag to sleep. My house is on the cooler side - if he was cold I'm sure he's let you know

Ahardmanisgoodtofind · 06/09/2015 20:29

Right now dd 7weeks is just in sleepsuit, she sleeps in just sleepsuit with a blanket(big cellular folded so it's quite thick).our house is generally warm though.I'll be adding vests soon and will prob buy a grobag too once she's Out of Moses basket and into cot where she's not so tucked in.

Dixiechick17 · 06/09/2015 20:41

My DD is 14 weeks old and just wears a babygrow to sleep in, she is swaddled in a muslin and has a thin cellular blanket, but that's it, I always check her chest temperature and add layers if needed. In the day I've only in the last week started putting vests on under her outfits

Sparrowlegs248 · 07/09/2015 00:42

Thanks all. I do check his chest/back. He does seem tks be a warm baby. Which is good as our house is not the warmest in winter!

I'd always rather she was colder than warmer due to SIDS risk!

knittingbee · 07/09/2015 19:22

DS had a febrile convulsion when he was a baby. Fucking scary. Since then, I err on the side of being a bit cooler. Unlikely that baby will die of being a bit too cold in this country.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 07/09/2015 19:30

I read recently that the incidence of SIDS increased last year for the first time in a long time, and they think it was due to babies overheating.
