Dry skin on my 3 month Boy

Hello all,
My boy had really bad dry skin when he was born and I've been applying olive oil but feel like it's not improving as I'm applying oil 3-4 times a day. The docs gave me the oilatum which I'm adding to the bath and dermo lotion on his skin. It has improved on his body but not his head and face.. Someone recommended coconut oil which I have and the head has improved but it looks like there is a later of dry skin on his face.. I've been takin it off with cotton wool which helps..

Jus wanted to know everyone's experience and what they used to help with dry skin etc ????

How often are you bathing him? At that age my kids had a bath once a week, if they were lucky. Once I dramatically reduced bath frequencies, any dry skin problems vanished.

Agree with Very, we topped and tailed but then bathed baby Mint about once every 2 weeks unless he needed it at that age. It is not what most books say but it was right for him.

I think I would have stuck with olive/natural oil at that age.

Baby Mint had some dry skin on his head and face which came and went without much treatment. If it's not causing your baby any discomfort then could you try leaving it for a few days (without bathing)?

As pp said avoid baths as it just dries their skin out. My ds ended up with full blown eczema but even then the best moisturiser I tried (and we tried them all!) was Aveeno Baby. I also found that the E45 bath oil (Oilatum equivalent) was much better than Oilatum.

My ds had it on his head and face really badly too-around his cheeks was so sore. Make sure you keep his nails very, very short too.

QV bath oil and cream worked well for us, as did Cetraben....both seemed fine at a very young age. Baths weren't a trigger for our dry skin....The biggest problem for us was weather changes...returning home from holiday, or from summer to winter (any chance that involved drier air, central heating etc) - this set off dry patches....

My 7 month old DS has terrible eczema we tried every cream and bath ointment under the sun. The only things we found to work is a mix of aveeno baby, eperderm (ointment not the cream) and oilatum in his baths. He now has beautiful baby soft skin again!

My DD had really dry skin. A friend suggested we try Weleda baby body lotion and it changed everything! I love the smell, no more flaky ankles and other creases, we've never looked back Smile

we found something called Bepanthen helped, recommended by the local specialist newborn nurse/assistant. www.bepanthen.co.uk/

I had similar problem with my little boy, we tried all the stuff you mentioned! Eventually went to the doctors and was prescribed Aveeno moisturiser and bath oil! I cannot tell you what a difference it made, it has cleared his skin up completely!
The cream is lovely and soft easy to apply, I just do it the once before bedtime after his bath. And I know a lot of people said to avoid the baths but with this Aveeno bath oil you don't necessarily have to do that. My baby has a bath every night (really helps settle him for bed) and the oil leaves a nice light layer of moisture on the skin, all signs of his eczema have now disappeared. Would definitely give it s try as I know friends who have tried it also and it's been a life saver:) I have mine both on repeat prescription and it saves us a fortune. Hope this helps :) x

I used Aloe propolis on my little girls patches of eczema and dry patches it's completely cleared them up. I lent it to my friend for her little boy he has serve eczema which was perscribed alsorts of ointments from the doctor nothing worked. The people's has completely cleared it, can see a very faint mark of where it was. It's brilliant and contains natural aloe Vera (not concentrated) so moisturises there skin x

I have literally just sorted this. I have a 6 month son. The dry skin on his body went quite easily with zerobase from Gp. The head and face was more tricky. It was like the dry skin was mixed with cradle cap and it seemed excemaee as well. Anyhow I slathered the zerobase on for a few hours then brushed it out and then rinsed with water. Couple of weeks of this I washed with shampoo. All looks good now. But I reckon he's a dry skin baby so will have to do this every few days. Olive oil made it worse. Apparently olive oil can make excema worse in some people.

Well my DS was over due by 10 days and the midwife said to apply olive oil.. I did it for over a month and i didn't see any results.. It actually made it worse around his head and face.. I will defo try all the stuff you guys have recommended.. I will start from aveeno as I can just go and buy from the chemist ????

My one year old developed patches of dry skin at about 3 months. They gradually got worse and more scaly and the doctor prescribed Aveeno which didn't do anything. The next step was going to be steroid cream which I was dead against. I started rubbing the inside of a banana skin on all his dry patches each morning. The difference within a week was amazing and within a month all the patches had gone. Occasionally I notice a small patch again, so I bust out the banana skin and it's gone.
