Nappy rash in 16mo old!

Joneseygirl77 · 25/08/2015 19:48

My dd 16mo had a bug last week- high temp for 2 days 39-40 degrees followed by a night of a low temp 35 degrees and cold sweats. Saw 2 GPs who checked her ears etc and one advised possible rotavirus. Sent a sample off to be tested but that came back clear.

We didn't have any vomiting but since the bug started we're having lots of loose nappies every day. She's usually a 1-2 poos a day girl but we're on 6-8 now. Only small ones but she's doing a poo in the night. She hasn't done this since 4mo!

She's never really suffered with nappy rash but now she's starting with it. Her bum is very red and sore all over. I use water wipes on her and always have done and having been applying metanium but at my wits end now.

Tried her dairy for 3 days and that made no difference. The nappies do have a teething smell to them. It's not diarrhea but more loose nappies. I'm assuming it's teething as we've got 3/4 canines cutting through the gum and I can feel 1 second molar. She's eating fine but we have had to give some nurofen for pain in the night.

More concerned about the nappy rash as she's crying at change time and bath time. We're doing nappy free as much as we can and changing her as soon as she's done a a poo.

Has anyone got any tips? Seems so late for nappy rash to start!

I think if its been a few days and you've used metanium and had lots of nappy-free time its probably worth asking the doctor if it could be fungal and trying some antifungal cream.

Thanks Rat. I've got a phone consultation booked with the GP tomorrow as I did wonder if it might be fungal. Guess they'll decide if I need to bring her in for a face to face appointment.

I am starting to wonder now if it's toddler diarrhea though. Nursery have confirmed they don't think it's diarrhea but I'm just concerned at home much she's pooing. We're up to 15 teeth and have never had her doing some many poos with teeth before.

DS had toddlers diarrhea, it started at 12 months though, I have no idea if it can start later? It was just something that he always had right from when he started eating food.

Nappy rash can start at any time that they have nasty poos, when they have been really bad I have put a few drops of pure essential lavender oil in the bath water then covered their bottom in Sudo cream before putting a nappy on.

Tothestars when did your ds grow out of it? We've not had any problems since she's been weaned so I can't see how it's linked to food.

Can't work out if it's linked to this bug or teething or if it's toddler diarrhea. Just want it to get better!

Suspect fungal too.

I suspect you mean a face to bottom consultation Grin

I would speak to the Dr and see what they think may be causing it. The TD diagnosis came after quite a few hospital appointments and a blood test to rule out anything more serious. He grew out of it a 5, which is normal. We kept him on a low fiber high fat diet, any fruit and veg with a high liquid content were a nightmare (cucumber, tomatoes, grapes) and had to be rationed. Once we changed his diet we started getting normal nappies for the first time.

Joneseygirl77 · 25/08/2015 22:01

Yes poocatcher Grin

This is the strange thing as my dd isn't a big fruit eater. She only eats apples/ pears/ bananas and melon. We struggle to get other fruit into her but she does like veg. Tends to have veg with both meals. She only drinks water or milk and she eats usual things like yogurt etc.

Will definitely speak to GP tomorrow as I'm not happy with the number of poos she's doing per day. Can't be an infection though as her sample came back clear.

We're 3.5 years off her turning 5 Shock

It was also meals like spag bol that could prove tricky, all the tomatoes in the sauce could be troublesome. I used to do a good load of cheese on top to balance it out. If it is TD is can be ok to manage so don't worry too much. I kept feeding him the difficult food and just balanced it out with some food that was high in fat, or on days when I knew we would be at home I let him eat as much as he wanted.

poocatcherchampion · 26/08/2015 19:04

How are you getting on?

Joneseygirl77 · 26/08/2015 20:26

I spoke to GP this morning who has prescribed timodine without needing to see her. She said the sample was tested for all bacterial infections and it was clear. She seems to think it's just been a virus which is taking time to clear and it might take 10-14 days to shift properly. She did also suggest DD might have developed a temporary intolerance to dairy as an after effect of the bug. Suggested leaving her off dairy for 3 days to see if has an impact. Said if she is eating and drinking ok and bright in herself then no need to see her. She didn't think it sounded like toddler diarrhea as that is much more acute apparently.

We've only had 4 poos today and one of those was overnight. Nappies still have that delightful aroma of teething though but a little better! She has got a very red bum though and it's obviously hurting her but hoping the cream works wonders as it's an anti fungal/ steroid/ hydrocortisone so should work!

Thanks for asking poocatcher and for all the advice from everyone.

My 16 month old DS was on a 5 day course of Timodene a few months ago and by the end of the course the rash cleared right up. I'm glad you've got it sorted Smile

BathshebaDarkstone · 26/08/2015 20:46

Take her to the doctor's, it may be infected. Flowers

Joneseygirl77 · 26/08/2015 21:04

I will go back bath but only if the timodine doesn't work. GP says a few days on that should clear it up.

It's like having a newborn again we're on constant poo watch!
