DS2 has *serious* nappy rash, he can't sit down at all

It has come up really quickly and is very, very red, ainsed and areas of skin have come away and are weeping . I don't think it is infected but it is certainly very sore. When he was in hospital during the week (unrelated cause) he was slightly sore and we were given metanium cream to use instead of Sudocrem. This has done nothing at all.

He's wandering around with no nappy on now, he ate his lunch kneeling on a chair because he can't sit down. He has diarrhoea, and I think the acid in his poo is making matters worse.

Does anyone have any advice apart from letting his bum have some air, metanium cream and Sudocrem? We've never had nappy rash this severe before.

bepanthan - in sainsburys and boots - it works
not sudocream. wouldnt put that stuff on my skin!

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 26/11/2006 15:56

has the metanium made it worse?

When Jess gets nappy rash like that, she reacts with metanium so use either canesten or bepanthen. Canesten is the best for her when metanium fails.

as much air as possible though. I feel your pain, really I do x

luke warm bath with bicarbonate of soda in it?

ScoobyDooTheyKnowItsChristmas · 26/11/2006 16:08

When dd had a really sore bum just like you are describing, i bathed her twice a day just in water, then used metanium & kept nappy off as long as possible.

I also changed her nappy very very often when she was wearing one so she was not in a dirty or wet one for long.

You could try putting lots of vaseline on it, then it may protect it against the acid as it would slide off? just a thought.

I have got some canestan, I wil try the bath, then chamomile tea and let it dry in the air, and then Canestan before he goes to bed.

Thanks for all the advice, it is horrible seeing him in pain, the fear in his eyes when he came to tell me he had done another poo was just awful.

Caldesene powder is very good too.

Poor little mite - he has been through a lot this week.

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 26/11/2006 17:14

Caldesene powder - that rings a bell, can I get it over the counter, Budabeast?

Yes - in Dublin anyway so am sure you can in UK.

Wimmilymorris · 26/11/2006 17:58

Have you tried Morhulin Ointment? It contains zinc oxide and cold liver oil, so it helps to heal as well as providing a barrier. Smells fishy though!

littlekiwibaby · 26/11/2006 22:04

Make sure you only use warm water to wash him down rather than wipes or soap or anything, make sure you dry him properly after changing his nappy and try using a thin smear of vaseline over his skin where it is sore- this keeps anything else from actually attacking his skin whilst allowing it to heal without drying it out.
Also try a silver liner in his nappy- have heard tell of them but not sure exactly where to get them from- maybe google it?
I am sorry to hear that he's in pain, but be assured it's not just your baby- my youngest has this whenever she eats lamb or sweet potatoes and also if i try and use a baby wipe too.
Good luck

Tui Bee Balme works miracles for us. You can definitely get it from here

colditz · 26/11/2006 22:12

Have you got a shower head? instead of wiping the poo off him bum, try showering it off. Ds1 had appalling nappy raash last year, and I remember that fear in his eyes so well whener I told him I needed to change his nappy (becasue of diarrhoea)

hayles78 · 27/11/2006 11:05

My dd of 9 weeks can get nappy rash that comes on quickly and is breastfed. think maybe its something i eat sometimes. ANyway Drapoline works for us. takes most of the first day using it to notice the difference and the second for it to be gone completely. in fact she has just had a bout.

I second baths and airtime for prevention and to help speed recovery. but stick with it even if it seems its not working like i said takes a day to see efforts working with my lo

Our DS had very bad nappy rash (raised red raw sometimes even bleeding skin etc - we tried all creams such as metanium/sudocrem/barrier creams and leaving him with no nappy on. The rash would gradually clear up then strike again with no warning so we went to the doctor who informed us it was actually a fungal infection and prescribed a cream which has worked miracles. He said that none of the usual nappy creams would have helped. It may be worth checking that rash is actually a nappy rash and not anything else. Hope this may help

bubble78 · 29/11/2006 21:33

my ds gets this every now and again just like you describe very sore and angry looking it may sound strange but if i put creams on to help it it makes it worse i find putting talc on every time i change his nappy it stays away

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 14/12/2006 03:16

give him a few drops of grapefruit seed extract in 4 oz of water to drink every day and also the same as a wipe solution when changing him. also use silk reuasable wipes and a silk liner in his nappy.

doyouwantfrankincensewiththat · 14/12/2006 05:18

would calpol /calprofen be a good idea to ease the pain & inflammation while you're treating the rash?
