I'm thinking of getting a booster seat for dd who is 17mths (god times flown ) her high chair is a crumbs magnet (got the chicco happy snacker) we are getting a new dining table/chairs in december so I'm thinking its time for the highchair to be stored away till next time

Hi,

Im just thinking the same for our DS. He is 20mnths old and we are staring to use the booster seat more and more, but havnt brooched it with DH yet as part of the bidding ploy to get the highchair I liked was 'it will last for ages' OOppps

LIZS · 26/11/2006 15:05

ds was about that age when we switched but with dd I'd learnt my lesson and bought a Stokke which she still uses at 5 !

As soon as they can sit up reliably - then they tend to copy other older siblings or adults around the table rather than throw food to the dog/floor. Used a high chair for dc1, but boosters for dc2 and dc3. Also means they are included properly in family meals - far more sociable!

We got one of those wooden Mothercare cube high chairs when DS was a baby - best baby item we have ever bought! It lasted as a high chair with a tray until DS was about 18 months ... then we took off the tray and it is the perfect height for a table ... he used it until he was 4 and a half when it was DD's turn to go into it. We put the tray back on for her until she was two and she is still sitting up at the table in it at 2 and 10 months. Brilliant.
It comes apart too ... the bottom part is a table and the top bit is a chair - so if she wants to do play dough/arty stuff we separate the two bits ....
We have had it for 7 years now and it has been used every single day.

PinkTinsel · 26/11/2006 19:29

we have one of those ones that turns into a table and chair, she was using it as a chair with tray at 12 months after 'the incident' and without the tray pushed upto the table part from about 17 months after another 'incident'

she's 20 months now and eats 90% of her meals at the big table with us as ds is almost sitting up and will need the high chair in a few weeks, would love to buy a trip trap for each of them but they're so expensive!

ghosty · 26/11/2006 19:30

What was the 'incident'?

PinkTinsel · 26/11/2006 19:31

that should say 'low chair with tray' and 'pushed up to the coffee table' [do'h]

PinkTinsel · 26/11/2006 19:33

she climbed out and lauched herself onto the tiled floor, luckily i was having a slovenly day and her head landed on a pile of washing but it was a close call.

and the other time she stood up and sat backwards on the tray while it was low down and it fell over and she fell backwards on the tiles.

ghosty · 26/11/2006 19:36

Oh dear [horror emoticon] ...

ghosty · 26/11/2006 19:37

harness??? We used the one from Mothercare that threaded through ...

PinkTinsel · 26/11/2006 19:38

yeah...... at least when she's at the table she's free to climb down when she wants so doesn't feel the need to fling herself free. ironically she's safer like that

PinkTinsel · 26/11/2006 19:38

she's an escape artist [sigh]

florenceuk · 26/11/2006 19:44

We use a Tripp Trapp - got rid of the highchair kit when she turned two.

I think Ds was around 18mths as the highchair broke. DD is 11mths and probably wont change her as early but only because she is less physically apt than DS was.

BettySpaghetti · 26/11/2006 19:52

DS (2.5) still uses the cube type highchair (the one you can seperate into a table and chair) -its the ideal height and position for him to be at the table with the rest of us.

I've been thinking for a while now that hes a bit old to be in there but I like the idea that he can't get out or down from the table!

We do have 2 childrens seats (DD already uses one of them) that we bought from a junk/antiques shop that he will move on to -wooden high seats with spindle backs. Trouble is he'll be on and off them until it drives us crazy

ilovecaboose · 26/11/2006 19:56

ds (2) sits on an ordinary chair at the table (sometimes with a cushion, sometimes on someone's lap). He has been doing without highchair/booster seat for a few months.

Highchair (got rid of about 9 months ago) - food troubles, bad associations as so screamed as soon as he saw it.

Booster seat (got rid of about 3 or 4 months ago) cos he rocked in it. The strap didn't even slow him down if he wanted to get out (but could get his foot caught in it and fall) and basically he hated it.

He's good at sitting at the table and he has a small table and chairs as well (less that £20 ikea) that we use if its just him eating or for doing crafty stuff.

We have a Tripp Trapp style adjustable chair (well a cheaper copy from Tchibo actually) which ds still uses at 5, but these days it's just a normal chair with a slightly higher seat and a foot rest really. Haven't used a highchair (i.e harness and/or restraining bar thing) at home since about 18 months.
