help. 3 week old baby boy and nappy changing misery...

Hi all.

Help me please!

Firstly my 3 week old baby boy HATES nappy change time. It breaks my heart and I don't know how to keep him calm or calmer. I tried covering the mat to make sure it isnt cold and I tried to be quicker (but i don't like to be too quick as he's prone to nappy rash ans I want to be sure he's dry) but from the second I undo his nappy he howls and the second I do up the new one hhe's calm! Anyone have any tips?

My second issue ia the midchange wees (yes! Plural). I appreciate its just part of the routine but anyone have tips to make it less of an ordeal for us both. I've had someone say open old nappy brieflynto let cold air in and then cloae again which works but when we eventually remove it there will always be another wee.

I just want the whole process to be less miserable for the poor little bean.

Have a wad of cotton wool ready to catch the wee. Is he ok when he's just lying on his back with the nappy on? What's he like when you're bathing him?

swashbucklecheer · 21/08/2015 20:27

He will get used to it! I found with ds2 a dummy helped (though i know some people don't like them). As far as possible try doing it when he least stressed ie fed and rested. I also do the blast of cold air before changing though i still have gone through countless vests for the unexpected widdle! The joys of boys!

MrsBalustradeLanyard · 21/08/2015 20:29

It's just one of those things, they hate being fussed about with.

I used to hold a wipe over DS's willy to catch any wee. But ideally I could have used a third hand. That passes after a wee while though.

Boys love weeing as soon as they're out in the fresh air! Mine did this and have had many wees on me/ in my eyes/mouth! As soon as you see their penis start to poke upwards you just have to be really quick to either put the nappy back or shove a cloth or whatever over it! Eventually (after months and months probably sorry) the novelty wears off and they don't do it so much.

As for the crying, mine did this every time I changed him or got him undressed etc. I'm pretty sure it's just the change in temperature feels weird so they're telling you! I think mine grew out of that after about a month. Meanwhile just sing songs pull faces anything to distract them (and you) from crying! & if possible try and make sure your hands are warm.

& Congratulations on your new baby!

GoldenPenguin · 21/08/2015 20:33

Oddly he enjoys bath time and doesn't make a sound.

When I lay him down the upset starts the second the tabs are undone on the nappy! Its like he knows what's coming!

I used to pop a folded muslin on his bits when I took the front of his nappy off which keeps him a bit warmer and makes it less likely for him to wee - and soaks it up if he did!

Yep. DS1 did this at every single baby massage class we attended. Without fail. I used to keep an old muslin to hand - they are very absorbent.

BikeRunSki · 21/08/2015 20:35

Open the nappy, cover him in a muslin square. This will keep draughts off and catch wee.

BikeRunSki · 21/08/2015 20:36

Sorry, I meant to say, do the nappy change under the muslin.

AngelBlue12 · 21/08/2015 20:36

A friend of mine has a load of little felt 'caps' that as soon as she opens his nappy she pops it on to stop any sprinkles!

I only have girls so no first hand experiences :)

My dd loved weeing as soon as her nappy was off too! Luckily hers never made it as far as my face! Grin

Mid-change wees we tackled with a wipe over him, and vest tucked well out of the ways. I also perfected the 10-second change, but he was a very infrequent poo-er so they were just wet.

He used to scream blue murder when I changed him, but suddenly stopped one day when he was about 6 weeks.

Congratulations on your squishy peeing baby Flowers

squigglehead · 22/08/2015 07:28

DS was exactly the same, as with Firefly it passed at the 6 week mark! Congratulations :)

dairyfreequeen · 22/08/2015 09:26

congratulations! our nappy changes used to be so stressful (they still are actually but only because ds flips over and crawls away the second i lie him down). We had explosive poos as well as wees, i dyed a load of muslins yellow and tucked one under his bum and through his legs to allow for all eventualities! if he doesnt pee theyre good for drying off with, quicker than cotton wool. And lots of singing still works for distraction! when i watched dh doing it i realised my getting stressed about it was making it worse, so being as silly and over the top as possible helped

Roseybee10 · 22/08/2015 09:30

It's a phase I promise. Both my girls hated nappy changes for the first few weeks as they hated being cold and being on the changing may instead of on a warm body.

I always put a towel down to stop the mat being cold and to catch any pee as both mine always peed as soon as the nappy was off in the early days.

Both loved getting their nappy changed by 8 weeks and my 6 month old loves chatting to me now while I change her.

Sparrowlegs248 · 22/08/2015 21:29

My DS is 4wks and is getting better, doesn't scream every change and we have had some calm silent changes! I always have a nice fluffy towel on the change mat downstairs, and change him on a towel on the bed upstairs.

Only had two mid change wees so far......i keep a soft flannel to hand to dry him with (got fed up with cotton wool fluff) and it is handy to catch stray wees with. :-)

Fluffy24 · 22/08/2015 21:42

We had a torrent of projectile poo that went several feet across the room and, as I realised what was happening and tried to stem the flow, up the wall and over both of us.

I second the advice about some sort of covering!

Lucky you. My DD was a crack shot. With wees and poos... up until about 4 months old, it was a rare occasion when we managed a nappy change without some kind of spillage.

meringue33 · 22/08/2015 21:52

We clipped a little cot mobile to the side of the changing table and he could look up at it and listen to the little tune. He loved it. They do grow out of it too as pp have said!

PebbleTTC · 22/08/2015 22:02

I find distracting my little fella by kissing his face works, or changing him after a feed when he is nice and calm works :-)

Smartiepants79 · 22/08/2015 22:15

My friends used to use a flannel to cover the bits. He's very little. Give him a few more weeks and he'll get used to being messed with.
Then he'll start being old enough to distract.

PasschApple0317 · 24/08/2015 05:57

My DD used to be like this, it only lasted a few weeks and now she actually loves nappy off time :) My friend pops a breast pad over her little boys bits when she is changing the nappy.

WiIdfire · 24/08/2015 06:01

Recommend a dummy. My boy screamed blue murder at nappy change time but with a dummy was happy as anything. You can keep it just for that purpose if you want, dont have to use it any other time.
