I'm aware of the increase of ibs and chrones in our generation, but has there ever been a generation before weaned later than ours? I thought when we started weaning at 4 months it was because it was put back to 4 months from weaning at weeks old so the generations before with better bowls if you like would have been weaned earlier than ours wouldn't they?
Not saying there's no benefit to waiting, I waited myself but I'm not entirely sure what they are when childhood allergies are still on the rise?

I've not read the full thread but advice where I live is give tastes from 4,months so a couple of teaspoons of what you are eating at each meal. I gave everything except v.v spicy, whole nuts and honey.
I fully weaned Ds at 5 months as he showed all the signs but stuck to any veg or fruit with random herbs thrown in (I made ice cube trays and sprinkled random herbs) for his main meals with our food added as finger foods and tasters.

This isn't meant to be controversial, just repeating information. A friend of mine, whose baby had some Heath issues, was told by a paediatric consultant that waiting until 6 months to wean was the opinion of a some people, but she was was of the opinion that 4 months was fine and many other leading paediatric dieticians felt the same. It's just the nhs commissioned research by someone that disagreed. It's up to you. I did BLW so my baby didn't eat much until 8/9months but I offered from 5mo. My LO loves sweet potato, fruit, boiled potatoes, peas, butternut squash at that age.

Oops I didn't mean specifically just regards to weaning, Culture, when I made the 'all the time'. I meant baby advice in general. Like I say I'm no expert and you clearly know your stuff. I just think people can be a bit militant about the 6 month rule.

Oh and to answer the thread, I didn't offer my DD much at that age, just tastes of things and stewed pears and apples mixed with baby rice.Smile

OP, if you do come back, aside from what everyone else is saying regarding weaning early, unless there is a medical need, I would just advise against it out of convenience!

Honestly, you are going to be feeding your child for the next 18+ years, weaning is messy, stressful and tiring. DS is 1 now and often yearn for the milk only days. Yes it's an exciting mile stone to get to, but in a couple of months you will honestly wondering why you put yourself through an extra 2 months of it. IMO.

Milk.

LynetteScavo · 21/08/2015 07:08

Obviously advice is milk until 6 months, but if you are going to give food earlier avoid wheat/wheatabix until at least 6 months as advised in t' olden days. Grin

There are some really unsupportive posts on this thread. There's no need to get pissy with a poster because you don't agree with what they are doing.

Peace and love.

Yeah I do feel for the op with a lot of these responses. Baby foods are still allowed to advertise as from 4 months maybe she doesn't know many mothers or hc professionals I don't think I saw a health visitor from weeks old until 9 month check if she took a look at baby foods when she was in the shop maybe she got the impression it was normal to wean from 4 months.

I weaned my daughter at 4 months, 19 years ago, according to the advice I was given. I was told no wheat, eggs, meat, fish, or anything containing cows milk until 6 months. But fruits and vegetables are fine and vegetables better than fruit.

has there ever been a generation before weaned later than ours?

Pretty sure it was 9 months in the 1920s. I've read a lot of 18th-century childrearing advice books where the advice is around 5/6 months. Not sure what happened for the few hundred years in between, but definitely not the case that weaning has just been getting later and later up until today.
